WILLIAM OLIVER SWOFFORD WILLIAM OLIVER SWOFFORD Pop SingerProducer, Retired Wrestler OLIVER! William Oliver Swofford, known professionally as Oliver was an American Pop Singer born on February 22, 1945 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He began singing as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the early 1960’s. He was a member of two singing groups, The Virginians and The Good Earth. He was then known as Bill Swofford. His clean cut good looks and his soaring baritone voice were the perfect vehicle for his July 1969 single - “Good Morning Starshine”. It was from the hit musical, “Hair”! The song reached # 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over a million copies and was awarded a gold disc in August 1969. In August 1969, Oliver reached # 2 on the Hot 1`00 and # 1 on the adult contemporary chart with Rod McKuen’s ballad - “Jean”. It also sold over a million copies and gave Oliver his second gold disc. He was included in a number of popular television shows including The Ed Sullivan Show. Oliver later parted company with his producer, Bob Crewe and preferred a simpler folk sound. He resumed the name Bill Swofford and toured hundreds of college campuses in the eastern and southern part of the United States. He later became a family man and became a business manager for a pharmaceutical company in Louisiana. He also sold real estate. In the late 1990’s he was diagnosed with cancer. He, unfortunately, died at the age of 54. He died on the same day as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Charles M. Schutxz, and Tom Landry. He is survived by his wife Becky and his ex-wife Margaret and two children Beth and Rob. His brother, John Swofford is a forker quarterback for UNC Chapel Hill, later athletic director for UNC Chapel Hill and currently the Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
