The tasty little treats can be baked up with almost limitless variations of flavor, and whole businesses have sprung up -- highly successful ones, at that -- that spe- Justin Willman as seen in "Cupcake Wars" Bookhout Funeral Home 2x2 cialize in gourmet versions of these delightful desserts. Perhaps, then, it's no mystery why "Cupcake Wars" has grown into such a success story for the Food Network. Along with its sister show, "Chopped," which ranks consistently as one of the culinary channel's biggest hits, "Cupcake Wars" has been bringing in the viewers on Sunday nights with its unique blend of colorful personalities, exotic and oftentimes bizarre mystery ingredients and, of course, the fun of watching these masters of their craft put together what can only be described as television eye candy. As in "Chopped," the bakers have three rounds of intense competition to make it through, with one of the hopefuls going home after each. Mystery flavors are presented that must be incorporated into the cupcakes, and the final round involves the grueling task of baking no fewer than 1,000 of the cute little cakes. Not only is there a lot of dough up for grabs, but the victorious baker of the competition also wins a showcase of his or her delectable delicacies at a major event. It's a prize that can put a baker's name on the culinary map, and after being put through the ringer on "Cupcake Wars," it's a pretty safe bet that whoever emerges as the champion deserves that place in the spotlight. The stakes are always high for the contestants, but the April 28 episode will be cranking up the heat to a new level. Four returning bakers are headed back to the kitchen for a second shot at the sweet $10,000 prize, and for them the stakes couldn't be higher. With an eye on taking the winner's title, the contestants will be duking it out for a chance to feature their creations at actress Tiffani Thiessen's birthday bash -the type of Hollywood gala that most bakers can only dream of catering.
