Ad rates furnished upon request. Longtime journalist moves to communications position T he Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) and HSPA lost a great one to the other side. Tracy Warner, editorial page editor and a 31-year veteran at The JG, accepted a position in corporate communications at Indiana Michigan Power. He started April 22. His previous positions at the paper date back to 1981 and include metro editor (which he calls "Lou Grant's job" for those old enough to remember), news editor, copy editor and reporter. The Hartford City guy's journalistic reach goes beyond the newsroom. Who knows how many student-journalists' lives he touched while teaching at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne and serving on the board that oversees the student newspaper. The Indiana chapter of Associated Press Managing Editors and HSPA Foundation always began planning the Road Show for Reporters with Warner's annual session on how to Tracy Warner, a 31-year veteran of The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) and most recently the newspaper's editorial page editor, speaks at the Road Show for Reporters in Indianapolis in 2011. Warner recently accepted a position in corporate communications with Indiana Michigan Power. avoid ticking off your editor. It never mattered how the committee spun the title, he always presented what he wanted newer reporters to know to keep them out of trouble. Warner volunteered for other events as well – judging other state's Better Newspaper Contests and interviewing at the annual Journalism Job Fair. He also won numerous journalism awards over the years, including first place in the Best Editorial Writer and third in Best General Commentary categories in the 2012 HSPA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest's largest daily division. Citizens in Fort Wayne, colleagues in the newspaper business and HSPA staff will miss him. South Bend parent company honored for community work T he Studebaker National Museum honored Schurz Communications and its local properties – the South Bend Tribune, WSBT TV and Radio and the Schurz Foundation – during its Hall of Champions dinner April 18. The Hall of Champions event each year recognizes an outstanding individual and/or company that contributed to the success of the Studebaker Corp., Studebaker National Museum, the transportation industry or the auto collector hobby. Schurz Communications and its properties were selected because of their service to the community and the museum, according to a release. The Schurz Foundation, funded with profits from Schurz Communications companies, has been a generous supporter of the museum's initial capital campaign and various Todd Schurz, left, president and chief executive officer of Schurz Communications Inc., receives an award April 18 as SCI and its local properties – the South Bend Tribune, WSBT-TV and Radio and the Schurz Foundation – were inducted into the Hall of Champions at the Studebaker National Musuem in South Bend. Presenting the award are Ginger and Brian Lake (center) and Arthur J. Decio. projects, including restoration of President Abraham Lincoln's carriage. In 1872, two brothers-inlaw — Alfred B. Miller and Elmer Crockett — founded the South Bend Tribune. Descendants of the family later launched the TV and radio stations. Last year marked a milestone for the companies: The Tribune turned 140 years old, WSBT Radio celebrated 90 years and WSBT-TV marked its 60th anniversary.
