All in the family Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center is proud of our many years as a member of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce. Our leaders have served as chairs and board members and on committees. It is a privilege to be part of the history of the Chamber. We are also proud of our link to Dr. Rafael Dufficy, founder of the San Rafael Chamber 100 years ago. Dr. Dufficy also had the idea to build a hospital that would allow patients to be discharged from full-service hospitals to recover in a caring environment. It turned out that Dr. Dufficy was a man ahead of his time, and he later sold the charming A-frame on 99 Montecillo Road to Kaiser Permanente. At the time, Marin Kaiser Permanente members received care in San Francisco. The A-frame hospital allowed us to care for patients in San Rafael. It was in 1976 that our present San Rafael Medical Center opened. Dr. Dufficy's family became part of the Kaiser Permanente family. His daughter Nancy married Jim Fewell, the first engineer on our campus. Both "came with the A-frame building." Jim retired over 25 years ago; now at the age of 95, he remains as kind, generous, and handsome as he was in his early days. Nancy worked for many years keeping the televisions in working order in the A-frame and then the hospital. Nancy and Jim's son Tim worked in our Outpatient Administration before becoming a San Francisco firefighter. Several of the Fewell's children worked in the Kaiser Permanente cafeteria as teenagers. Dr. Dufficy made his mark on San Rafael, leaving Marin County with the legacy of his children, grandchildren, and great and great-great grandchildren. He truly brought to life the expression "six degrees of separation." Happy anniversary San Rafael Chamber, with an additional nod to former Chamber President and CEO, 1987-2005, Elisa Giambastiani!
