But these very measures can make life more dangerous for victims of domestic violence, accord- ing to Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council (CCAPC) Executive Director Cathy Robertson. Domestic violence affects one in three women and one in seven men in Cleveland County, according to Robertson. "Places such as work, church, the gym and other activities nor- mally offer respite from abuse at home," she says. "But because we are now being told to stay at home, this respite may no longer be available. Being isolated at home with the additional emo- tional and financial stress of this pandemic may increase the inci- dence and severity of domestic violence." Robertson says that it is for this reason that the CCAPC will continue to answer their cri- sis line 24 hours a day as they always do. The CCAPC domestic violence shelter will also remain open for victims who are in dan- ger from an abuser. If you or someone you know is sheltering in place with an abuser, Robertson offers these helpful tips to increase safety: • Make a list of supportive people to have regular check-ins via phone or video chat. • Take breaks outside, if you're able, keeping social distancing in mind. Consider what places in your home are easy to get in and out of during a conflict. • Create a code word to share with your support network that indicates you are in need of immediate help. • Make and hide an "escape bag" with your important documents, medicine, keys, and other items. • Be gentle with yourself; you're doing the best you can. • Remember the CCAPC Crisis Line, 704-481-0043, is staffed 24 hours a day. Services for abuse victims are being provided by the Abuse Prevention Council even amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A children's playroom is just one of the features of the CCAPC shelter. Trained staff answer the CCAPC Crisis Line, 704-481-0043, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
