By George Dickie Anyone who has followed Na- tasha Leggero's career knows she likes to mine class differences for laughs, be it in her stand-up comedy or film and TV roles. Which makes her latest project right up her alley. In the multi-camera comedy "Broke," premiering Thurs- day, April 2, on CBS, Leggero ("Another Period," "The Do- Over") co-stars with Pauley Perrette ("NCIS") as Elizabeth and Jackie, working-class sisters who took divergent paths in life. While Elizabeth apparently married well with Javier (Jaime Camil, "Jane the Virgin"), stun- ningly handsome and heir to a Mexican family fortune, Jackie is a struggling single mom and divorcee with a young son and a ramshackle house in the Los Angeles suburb of Reseda. But it turns out Elizabeth's life isn't so great, either. Spend- thrifts and wastrels, they've gone through all of Javier's trust-fund money and Daddy has cut them off. With nary a dime to their name, they turn up on Jackie's doorstep seeking refuge — and Jackie isn't all that crazy about taking the peo- ple she resentfully refers to as "Aunt Hoity and Uncle Toity," as well as their manservant Luis (Izzy Diaz, "Telenovela"), in. But she does so — grudgingly. The role gave Leggero the chance to play to her own strength to paint Elizabeth as a nouveau-riche princess with a full catalog of affectations, who is embarrassed by her working- class background and horrified by her new surroundings. "I've always been obsessed with class," Leggero explains. "And even if you're not a cer- tain class, why can't you just act like you're that class? And that's a lot of what I have done in my stand-up and so playing this part is really fun for me because it feels like an exact fit." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop Natasha Leggero goes 'Broke' in new CBS sitcom Cover Story Cover Story By Jay Bobbin With a much-anticipated "Friends" reunion special also on the horizon for him, Matt LeBlanc's plan these days is to stay happy and satisfied in his work. Forever television-legendary as Joey Tribbiani of "How you doin'?" fame, the actor returns with the fourth season of his current CBS sitcom "Man With a Plan"' Thursday, April 2. He continues his role as Pittsburgh construction-company co-owner Adam Burns, whose understand- ing of "family" expands with his increased involvement in helping his wife (Liza Snyder) raise their children (Grace Kaufman, Mat- thew McCann, Hala Finley). "It's a fun show to work on," the friendly LeBlanc says, "and it's kind of a departure for me. I've always played the single guy Checking in with Matt LeBlanc or the guy who's not in a rela- tionship and has no kids. Now, this makes sense for me. It's not a high-concept show, it's kind of right down the middle, and it's about the things that happen in life. And from my experience, some pretty funny, crazy things happen." LeBlanc gives plenty of credit to "Man With a Plan" creators and executive producers Jackie and Jeff Filgo for getting the show to Season 4, deeming them "really smart. I think this season is our best thus far, because we're telling more character-driven sto- ries, and we've figured out where the strengths of the show are." That's something LeBlanc also knows well from his "Friends" days, and he's looking forward to rejoining his former co-stars to tape the special for the forthcom- ing HBO Max streaming service. "It's not like another episode, with us playing those characters again," he notes. "It's a celebra- tion, if you will, of what an awe- some experience that show was."
