Around theburg office, we seem to have the
same debate each year.
come march, someone wants to do a wintry
cover, maybe a snowy cityscape, an idea I shoot
down with annual regularity.
"You can't do winter in march," I state.
I'm not denying that we seem to get a
snowstorm every march, often the heaviest of
the year. but march is tricky. maybe it's 20 and
snowy; maybe it's 70 and glorious. You just
never know.
And, besides, people are tired of the cold,
snow and ice—at least, I am.
"It's an aspirational month," I say. "everyone's
ready for spring."
thus, we stay away from seasonal covers each
march, until we're more confident which way
mother nature is headed in fickle central PA.
For the past few years, we've had another
annual march tradition at theburg, a section
honoring some of our area's women in business.
recently, a visitor to our office mentioned to
me that women seem to predominate among
new business owners in harrisburg. she pointed
out, as examples, Andrea grove of elementary
coffee, Jennie o'neill of Knead and of Dani
waters of tomboys, who all have opened new
shops recently.
of course, it's not just storeowners, I added.
In the harrisburg area, women fill the top ranks
in so many fields—real estate, banking, law,
government, etc. It's an extremely long list,
and we know that our section, limited in pages,
could never cover the incredible breadth of
stories, trials and triumphs.
I personally would like to express my profound
gratitude to the all-female (except for me) burg
staff: Lauren, megan, Kelsey and maddie. And to all
our regular contributors: missy, Diane, Yaasmeen,
stephanie, Diane, Phyllis, Kait, Karen, sam, susan,
rosemary, barbara, gina, Dani, Ann and Kristen.
without these amazingly talented women,
theburg simply would not exist.
Lastly, I want leave the long-suffering fans of
theburg Podcast with a reason for hope. After a
year's hiatus, we plan to bring back the podcast
this month. we're changing it up, opting for a
monthly magazine style format, hosted by one
of our long-time contributors, Karen hendricks.
If you're not already a subscriber, you can
find "theburg Podcast" under the Apple and
Android podcast apps.
I'm eager to hear what you think!
