One of those who wanted to see a community garden become a reality was Threatha Bennings. She lives in Grahamtown and has always wanted a community garden. The Grahamtown GTEAM got involved and soon there were 24, 4 foot by 16 foot garden plots laid out and fenced on Gypsy Street which is immediately off Hardin Road. All the vegetables raised are for the use of those who sign up and pay $20 for the season. They also share the vegetables with the folks in the community. Presently, Wilfred McDowell, President of the GTEAM, says there are ���ve plots left for this year. You can call Mr. McDowell and make reservations for a plot. You are asked to ���ll out an application and submit it with the application fee of $20.00. You may pick up your application at the garden and then send it to Wilfred McDowell at 161 Bethany Church Road, Forest City, NC 28043. If you need more direction you may call either Charles McDowell at 828-245-2032 or Wilfred McDowell at 828-2483135. Each 4 foot by 16 foot plot is ���lled with top soil, organic material, and mulch. The community garden has rules and regula- tions which everyone must agree to when signing up. It is completely fenced and locked. The friendliness and ���neighbor to neighbor��� approach makes everyone participating feel great. Everyone loves the helping hands of their neighbors. Everybody shares and everyone cares. Recently a thank you letter was sent to Threatha Bennings from the First Lady, Michelle Obama. Mrs. Bennings wrote the First Lady and sent pictures of the Grahamtown Community Garden. She told her the example she set with the White House garden was a true inspiration. The project has become an outstanding example of what a community can do. The Grahamtown Community Garden displays what can be done when people come together. The garden is available to everyone in Rutherford County. It is a great way to save money and bene���t from some delicious home grown vegetables. Last year an overwhelming amount of good things to eat came from this garden.
