Medium to dark gray tones remain popular col- ors for Wisconsin home exteriors. "Overall, it seems that Midwesterners tend to be cautious with their design decisions. They select what they find com- fortable," said St. Francis design professional Sheila Semrou, owner of Milwau- kee-based Sheila Semrou Consulting, LLC. "But for many, I feel the gray exteri- ors have been a welcome change that adds variety to neighborhoods." Wemlinger noted that exterior living spaces such as outdoor kitchens; areas for sitting and relaxing, complete with sofas, loveseats and coffee tables; and gardens with benches continue to gain momen- tum. Spaces such as these "are all indicative of people today wanting to relax and get away from it all, even if it means just opening the back door to get there," she said. Although it's often tempt- ing to follow the latest home design trends, Semrou urges homeowners to make design decisions carefully, especially when it comes to painting. "It's really about putting the updated and appropri- ate elements together," she said. "Every home should be evaluated individually to determine best color and material selections based on architectural style, building materials, and interior layout and design. Typically, a fresh coat of paint is a good thing. But the wrong color can be a costly mistake. Choosing the paint colors is very important because it can make the owners proud of a home while they live there, and make a house appear fresh, bright and updated when attracting buyers.
