Who needs a host? Evidently, those staging this year's Oscars feel they'll be perfectly OK without one ... again. After last year's controversy that ultimately took would-have-been-host Kevin Hart out of the picture, the show went on anyway, with many critics and view - ers declaring that it was just fine. For the second consecutive time, then, no one person will be steering the event as ABC airs the 92nd edition of the movie industry's biggest night Sunday, Feb. 9, from Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke foresees this year's Oscars delivering what she believes last year's offered, "huge entertain - ment value, big musical numbers, big comedy and star power. Our goal is to present the most entertaining show possible, and the producers have already put together a plan for what is proving to be a really enter- taining telecast." Those producers are filmmakers Lynette Howell Taylor (the most recent version of "A Star is Born") and Stephanie Allain ("Hustle & Flow"). This year's Oscar show comes at least a couple of weeks earlier than usual, substantially reducing the time available for nominees' campaigns. It also caused a reconfiguration of the entire film-award season, since the last stop traditionally is the Academy Awards. Thus, the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, England's BAFTA Film Awards and the Film Independent Spirit Awards (among other such events) have been virtually on top of one another in recent weeks. With the controversial "Joker" leading the pack with 11 nomina - tions — and then "The Irishman," "1917" and "Once Upon a Time .. in Hollywood" with 10 each — fol- lowing are the nominees in several categories in the 92nd Oscars. On the heels of appearing in Fox's "Almost Family," the Emmy- winning "thirtysomething" alum has another extended acting role in the fact-inspired ABC drama "For Life," which counts Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson among its executive producers and premieres Tuesday, Feb. 11. Busfield plays an ex-politi - cian and new mentor to an inmate (Nicholas Pinnock) who becomes a lawyer, trying to overturn his own life sentence while helping fellow prisoners. "So much of the series is dealing with desperation," says Busfield, who joins "For Life" in its second episode. "I play a character who, from the legal side, has sort of reached a point where — with Checking in with Timothy Busfield DUIs, and he's a former state sena- tor — he has decided that service will probably be his only way to kind of redeem himself in his own mind. I think my character kind of helps focus on what lawyers might be feeling when their conscience takes over. "I become (the convict's) para- legal, and I'm here to help him in any possible way I can," Busfield adds. "In the course of a career where I've done killer-cat movies and 'Field of Dreams' and good shows and bad shows, this one rolls out like a goodie. I saw the pilot, and I knew I wanted to be a part of the team." With an ABC "thirtysomething" revival — in which he'll reprise the role of Elliot Weston — also on the horizon for him, Busfield reasons, "I'm happy to be working. Look, I'm an actor for hire, and I'll go where they're paying me." Birthdate: June 12, 1957 Birthplace: Lansing, Mich.
