A cardiology fellowship is planned for 2020 with other residencies and fellowships to follow, such as podiatry, orthopedics and critical care medicine. "We're a rapidly growing program and a pretty busy facility," Maharty said. "The single, biggest issue we've faced as a program is space. We plan to address that with a new training facility to open just in time for arrival of the 2021 class of residents." The five-story Center for Medical Education and Research will be constructed in a spot right next to the Cancer Treatment and CyberKnife Center. Most of the needed funds have already been secured. The effort was kicked off with a $1 million grant from the Thomas R. and Elizabeth E. McLean Foundation. It also includes funds voted into the total by Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's board and the Cape Fear Valley Volunteer Auxiliary board. Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation has launched a capital campaign – Caring for the Future – to raise $3 million from the community. Employees and physicians were able to designate funds for the building during their annual fall employee giving campaign. The funds received for the residency program will pay dividends for years to come. According to a study by Michael Walden, chief economist at North Carolina State University, the residency program will create 923 jobs and generate $574 million for the region over 10 years. That's equal to bringing a large company to town. The best part is that the company's employees will all be future doctors. "The economic impact is huge," said Sabrina Brooks, executive director of Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation. "A residency program brings these professionals to our community for three to five years and in that time they become a part of the community, living here and spending money here." At the end of that time, these new physicians will be well prepared to bring their expertise to the rural areas that need them most. Studies have shown that doctors tend to begin their careers within a 50-mile radius of where they completed their residency.
