1 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 5, 2013 A/Otsego Manor B/Ace Glass Co. 2x3 'Chopped All-Stars' returns for a third season TV Media I t seems the arrival of spring has left the Food Network seeing stars. On Sunday, April 7, Food's top-rated series "Chopped" is set to premiere its annual celebrity installment. Twelve culinary stars and four food-loving celebrities have signed up to compete in Season 3 of "Chopped All-Stars," but by the end of the limited-run tournament, only one grand champion will win the $50,000 prize for the charity of their choice. This star-studded formula has worked well for Food. The inaugural installment in March 2011, which crowned Nate Appleman as the big winner, brought in a whopping 5.6 million viewers for the premiere episode -- at the time, the most-watched episode in "Chopped" history. The second "All-Stars" edition in April 2012 also fared well in the rat- Amanda Freitag and "Chopped" host Ted Allen ings, as "Chopped" judge Marcus Samuelsson battled his way to the top. This week's debut pits stars from the Food Network against those from its sister station, the Cooking Channel. Fresh off a recent appearance on "Iron Chef America," Nadia G. is set to spice things up in the first battle when she competes against "Sandwich King's" Jeff Mauro, Gabriele Corcos of "Extra Virgin" fame, and "Home Made in America" star Sunny Bookhout Funeral Home 2x2 Anderson. Next week's installment is titled "Mega Chefs" and features big-time competitors such as Elizabeth Falkner, Chuck Hughes, Gavin Kaysen and "Top Chef: All-Stars" winner Richard Blais. The following week is the perennial "Chopped Judges" round that pits Alex Guarnaschelli against fellow judges Amanda Freitag, Scott Conant and Marc Murphy. "Chopped" goes to Hollywood for the last competition before the grand finale. Johnny Weir, Joey Fatone, Laila Ali and Judy Gold might have different backgrounds, but they're hoping their love of cooking will vault them past their fellow competitors and into the final berth. The four finalists will battle it out one more time during the May 5 finale, and in true "Chopped" style, it won't be easy. The mystery ingredients will include an overly salty vegetable paired with a fresh seafood item, cheddar-filled pretzels for the entree round, then it's freeze-dried grapes with Marcona almonds for the dessert round. Thanks to unknown ingredients and the pressure that comes with a time limit, a "Chopped" competition can be anyone's game. But one thing's for certain — expect the competition to heat up in the weeks to come as these stars put their reputations on the line for the charity of their choice.
