Regan McCormack DC CCEP, CCSP® Michelle McCormack DC, CCEP Healthy Children A recent study of 13 year old children found that 22% had low back pain within the last 3 months. The study also showed that degenerative changes in the spine were visible on MRI but that only 8% of children sought care for their pain. This study shows that injuries can occur early in life but are often ignored. Unfortunately, injuries only get worse with time when left untreated. Kids can benefit from chiropractic just as adults do! Early detection and treatment can repair and resolve the problem instead of leaving it to develop into a major problem at a later age. Children go through so many changes as they grow. All of the major systems go through countless developmental stages. The nervous system is the first to develop and controls all the others. It is therefore very important to have as little interference as possible with the nervous system in the growing child. Research has shown that one of the worst interferences with the nervous system is a vertebral subluxation, a misalignment of the spine which results in pressure on the nervous system. Subluxations can occur very early in life. One of the most traumatic things to the spine is the birth process. Especially in a difficult delivery, the trauma to the spine and delicate nerves can be dramatic. Have you tried being squished into a ball for 9 months, lately? Soon after birth is good time to start care of the spine and nervous system. As children begin to walk, they take hundreds of falls. In the early years they are always falling off bikes or out of trees. We call this the learning process as their brains learn to control and co-ordinate their bodies. All of these small traumas add up and affect the spine. How many parents have taken children to have their teeth or their eyes checked by the proper doctor? How often has your child been to a chiropractor to have his or her spine checked? Chiropractic care is a very important part of you and your children's health care. Make an appointment to have your child's spine checked by a chiropractor on a regular basis.
