4 • January 5 - 11, 2020 • Brainerd Dispatch By Jessica Gosse TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "AJ and the Queen" RuPaul ("RuPaul's Drag Race") delivers a fabulous new series to Netflix on Friday, Jan. 10, when he stars as famous drag queen Ruby Red, aka Robert Lee, in this com- edy series. The series follows Ruby after he is conned by his partner, Lady Danger (Tia Carrere, "Relic Hunter"), and left completely broke with his dream of opening a drag club destroyed. In an at- tempt to get his life back on track, he goes on a cross-country tour as Ruby. Just as he's heading out, he meets AJ (Izzy G., "The High- waymen," 2019), a street-savvy 10-year-old who is trying to get away from his troubles at home by stowing away in Ruby's RV. He reluctantly agrees to bring AJ along, and the two form a surpris- ing bond as they travel across the country. Don't miss the hilarity and heart of this fierce duo when "AJ and the Queen" premieres. "Cheer" The world of cheerleading has served as a basis for entertain- ment for years, from the 1973 film "The Cheerleaders" to the Bring It On franchise of the early to 2000s, and even the 2019 film "Poms." While those films were all good fun, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, delve into the real world of competitive cheerleading in this new six- episode docuseries. The show fol- lows the competitive cheerleaders at Navarro College in Texas, who, led by coach Monica Aldama, have won 14 national championships in the past 19 years. It's about more than just the intense workouts and training sessions they take part in leading up to the final competition. The true fascination comes from what happens off the mats, seeing the athletes struggle to meet the high expectations as they cope with personal setbacks, sacrifices and injuries. Director and producer Greg Whiteley stat- ed: "Showing the poetry between the exactness of their routines juxtaposed with the intricacies of their personal lives produces my favorite moments in the series." Witness both the beauty and the grit of competitive cheerleading in the premiere of this new docu- series. "Medical Police" On Friday, Jan. 10, don't miss the premiere of this Netflix original medical comedy. When American physicians Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes, "Kevin Can Wait") and Owen Maestro (Ron Huebel, "Transparent") discover a deadly virus in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that could wipeout entire civilizations, they are recruited by the govern- ment. As an insidious conspiracy is discovered, the duo searches all over the world to find a cure with the help of a team of gov- ernment agents. Malin Akerman ("Billions"), Lake Bell ("Bless This Mess") and Rob Corddry ("Chil- drens Hospital") star in recurring roles. "Giri/Haji" On Friday, Jan. 10, this dark Brit- ish crime series makes it's debut. Takehiro Hira ("Sanadamaru") stars as Japanese detective Kenzo Mori, who travels to London when a gang war errupts as a result of his brother Yuto (Yosuke Kubo- zuka, "Alley Cat," 2017) being accused of murdering the nephew of a Yakuza member. Yoto is miss- ing and presumed dead, so Kenzo must navigate the dangerous criminal underworld of London in order to find out if his brother really did what he's been accused of. Roughly translating to "Duty/ Shame," this is a thrilling crime series you don't want to miss. "Zumbo's Just Desserts" Season 2 Fans of shows like "The Great British Baking Show" and "Sugar Rush" will be excited to get an- other dose of sweetness as this Australian baking show returns for a second season on Friday, Jan. 10. Amateur bakers go head to head, competing for the $100,000 prize and preparing sugary confec- tions for the judges, Australian chef Adriano Zumbo and British cook Rachel Khoo. The series fol- lows the standard cooking show format: the bakers participate in themed rounds like the franken- dessert (two desserts in one) and creating a dessert that defies gravity. Elimination takes a slightly different turn, though, as the bot- tom two competitors face off in the "Zumbo Test," which consists of them replicating one of Chef Zumbo's desserts. The chef with the lowest score goes home. Catch this fun and creative reality series when Season 2 premieres. "Go! Go! Cory Carson" Anyone with young children (who is maybe getting a little tired of "Paw Patrol") will appreciate this new animated kids series from the creators of "Ratatouille" (2007), "Finding Dory" (2016) and "Mon- ster's University" (2013). Based on the popular series of toys, Go! Go! Smart Wheels, the series follows Cory Carson, who is a young car living in Bumperton Hills with his parents and his little sister. Just like any kid, he's focused on the important thing in life: having fun! Of course, Cory also faces difficult moments, including the always- important first day of school, mak- ing friends and how to handle an oil leak (the car version of wetting yourself). With the help of his fam- ily and friends, Cory learns impor- tant life lessons while still having lots of fun in along the way. BINGE THIS: HULU "White Collar" Matt Bomer ("Magic Mike XXL," 2017) stars as the impossibly charming and brilliant con artist Neal Caffrey in this fun drama, which is currently available to stream in its entirety. For years, Caffrey evaded the FBI, much to the frustration of Special Agent Peter Burke (Tim Dekay, "American Crime"), before he was finally cap- tured. But with only a few months left in his sentence, he escapes prison to try to find his girlfriend, Kate (Alexandra Daddario, "Why Women Kill"). When Burke once again finds Caffrey, with every in- tention of putting him back in jail for good, Caffrey proposes a deal. Rather than sit in a cell for the rest of his life, Caffrey offers to use his expertise as a forger, thief and con to help the FBI capture dangerous white-collar criminals. This thrill- ing series ran for six seasons, all of which are available now. BINGE THIS: PRIME VIDEO "Chuck" Spy TV tropes take a hilarious and modern turn in this series avail- able for streaming. Chuck Bar- towski (Zachary Levi, "Shazam!," 2019) lives a less-than-ordinary life. He got kicked out of university and lives with his sister, Ellie (Sar- ah Lancaster, "Everwood"), and her fiance, Devon (Ryan McPartlin, "L.A.'s Finest"). He has a job repairing computers at the local Buy More with his best friend, Morgan (Joshua Gomez, "With- out a Trace"). His life is suddenly turned upside down when his former university roommate (who, coincidentally, got him kicked out) sends him an email on his birth- day. What Chuck doesn't know is that his old classmate is now a CIA agent who has gone rogue, and that email is encrypted with a pro- gram called the Intersect, which uploads millions of government secrets to Chuck's brain when he opens it. Now, with his head filled with classified information, Chuck is the target of criminal organiza- tions that want the information and technology for themselves. Luckily, he has two handlers — the beautiful and strong CIA agent Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski, "The Handmaid's Tale") and the gun-happy and brutal NSA agent John Casey (Adam Baldwin, "Fire- fly"). Hilarity ensues as they go on missions while trying to protect Chuck, his family and his friends. Watch all five seasons of this fun series now.
