I could not possibly write my final editor's note without throwing some sort of pop culture reference into the headline. I selected the title of a book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams because it's sung by dolphins leaving Earth — and I love dolphins — and because it's Douglas Adams. If you couldn't tell by now, I'm sort of a major geek who loves that kind of stuff. I also chose it because I am indeed thankful for the many things I have experienced, read and heard during my tenure at The Scene. Some of the many highlights: • Getting to hear frequent — and often loud — debates among my co-workers about the rock bands they love and despise. Not only being able to listen intently to their opinions, but also to work with them to produce our Music March Madness cover story last month. Being able to write on what you are passionately opinionated about as part of your job is amazing. And reading Mark Boshnack and Emily Popek's commentary was just as good. • Having the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear hosted by television hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in October 2010 for The Scene was incredible. Standing among the throngs of people with signs — some slightly offensive, most clever and/or silly — to hear great music and to band together for sanity's sake was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that I won't forget. • Talking to the talented group of artists and entertainers that live in our area has been informative, interesting and fun. These include Being able to highlight the wealth of talent and entertainment options we have here and provide that to you has been one of the best parts of the job. These artists include the trio featured in our Exhibit of the Month of Pages 6 and 7: Maria Brockmann, James Mould and Wendy Stanton. Learning about how many have visited and returned to stay here because of the area's beauty and inspirational value has given me a greater appreciation for where we live and work. • Exploring my own interests through columns and reviews for The Scene has been rewarding and exciting. As a copy editor by trade, I spend most of my time working with other peoples' stories and work. The Scene has allowed me the freedom to explore my own writing style and voice by honing my skills, too. • Reading and working with talented contributors to this publication has been a wonderful experience. Emily — Laygirl Fashion columnist, writer and overall doer-of-many-things — has been a welcome source of story ideas, helpful opinions and general voice of reason when the days seemed a little overwhelming. Mark has exposed me to more realms of music through his New Music Notes column than I could ever do alone. See Mark and Emily's columns for this month on Page 5. And Marguerite Uhlmann-Bower (her column is on Page 10), Kevin Eggleston (his writing is on Page 11) and Ashok Malhotra (Yoga Life is on Page 9) have provided all of us a wonderful window into their expertise and viewpoints through their columns each month. Thank you again for reading The O-Town Scene. It has been a pleasure producing it for you, and I hope a pleasure to read. Please continue to submit your events and arts items to arts@thedailystar.com. Adrienne Wise is the editor of The O-Town Scene and associate managing editor of The Daily Star. She will miss teasing Mark and Emily about who could turn his or her column in first. Mark finally won this month.
