letteR FRom the eDitoR Last month, theburg opened our doors for the candlelight house tour, an annual event organized by historic harrisburg Association. we had never participated before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Fortunately, the weather cooperated—chilly but dry—and a steady stream of people flowed through our doors all afternoon long, many hundreds in all. It was fascinating speaking with our visitors, who mostly did not live in harrisburg—I'd say that 80 to 90 percent resided in the suburbs and beyond. most read us, some were big fans, but not everyone was familiar, especially those from farther outside the area. A lot of people asked me questions. the three most popular were probably: 1. how long has theburg been around? 2. how do we choose our covers/cover artists? 3. how do we stay in business? so, I told them that we've been publishing for 11 years (this month!) and that we choose our cover art based on a theme or an interesting idea that we have then identify an artist or photographer who we believe can execute it well. the third question—how do we stay in business—was asked, I presume, because people know that the news industry is in such dire straits. but it was actually the easiest one for me to answer. we exist because of one thing: community. the greater harrisburg community has rallied around theburg, supporting us when many other news organizations are failing. It was exciting to tell this story again and again to the people who came by. on that day, visitors from schuylkill, Franklin and berks counties, and even a guy from maryland, left knowing about theburg and understanding at least one important thing about harrisburg—the people here support their community. During the house tour, several people mentioned to me that they keep a copy of theburg in their homes all month long, reading it and referencing it until the next issue comes out. through these conversations, I locked up the doors that night with the hope—the belief—that we serve a community that also supports us. laWRance BinDa Co-Publisher/Editor-in-Chief lbinda@theburgnews.com pa FaRm shoW 2016. couRtesy: pa DepaRtment oF agRicultuRe. geneRal anD letteRs 920 n. thIrD st., suIte 101 • hArrIsburg, PA 17102 www.theburgnews.com eDitoRial: 717.695.2576 aD sales: 717.991.1660 co-PubLIsher/ eDItor-In-chIeF: LAwrAnce bInDA LbInDA@theburgnews.com co-PubLIsher: J.
