"I used to sign Sally Field's auto- graph in the '60s," the music icon reveals. "People would come up to me and say, 'Could I have your autograph, Miss Field?' I'd say I wasn't her, and they wouldn't be- lieve me, so I just signed her name. There was about a year-and-a-half where we really lined up in terms of our looks." One of the top-selling female recording artists in history, 10- time Grammy winner Ronstadt receives one of the most presti - gious of all entertainment awards in a CBS telecast Sunday, Dec. 15. Taped the previous weekend at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and hosted by past recipient LL Cool J, the 42nd annual event also salutes two-time Oscar win - ner Field and the children's series "Sesame Street" (which is marking its 50th anniversary), conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and mu- sic's Earth, Wind & Fire. "It's hard to accept and evalu- ate your own work," the good- humored Ronstadt reflects. "I just know it took me a lot of years." As for the part of receiving the honor she may appreciate the most, she adds, "I'm so happy I don't have to give a speech! I've developed quite a stammer because of the Parkin - son's (disease, which Ronstadt was diagnosed with in 2012)." Since a brief filmed biography of the honoree is part of the presenta- tion, Ronstadt notes she finds any career recap "a little daunting. I don't want people to think the (the work in the) '70s is all I did. I did my best singing in the '90s, and I really only started learning how to sing in the '80s." Fans of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Ronstadt might challenge that. After scoring her first success with The Stone Poneys and the tune "Different Drum," she launched a parade of solo singles including "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," "Heat Wave," "It's So Easy," "The Tracks of My Tears" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (and such albums as "Heart Like a Wheel," "Prisoner in Disguise" and "Living in the USA"). Her work eventually cov - ered a number of genres. "I don't like listening to my own stuff, because it's frozen in time," explains the subject of the well-reviewed documentary "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice," which CNN will show on New Year's Day. "It makes me think that I was never able to sing. If I do listen to it, I'm astonished at how much work it was and how long it took. And the better I got, the more respect I got." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop Sally Field and others are feted at Kennedy Center Honors Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie For Toby Kebbell, signing on for "Ser- vant" was a no-brainer. After all, the Apple+ thriller about a Philadelphia couple who unravel in the wake of a tragedy had a great script, a great cast and M. Night Shyamalan as executive producer. What was there not to like? "Night's so detail-oriented and that's exactly how I like to be with things," the 37-year-old British ac - tor explains. "So when I came with an idea, Night had another detail, Night had another thought and so it just was such a blessing to work with someone who's decided, 'We're going to shoot this in order from start to finish, we're going to go through it like this. I want you to focus on your story, so when I'm working with you we're tell - ing your story. ... And so let me make you read and I'll weave the Checking in with Toby Kebbell story together.' ... I mean, it felt very much like we were telling our stories and then he was doing that great work that he does where he weaves it together and tells a thrill- ing story." In "Servant," Kebbell plays Sean Turner, a chef who finds his mar- riage to wife Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) slowly crumbling after their infant son dies suddenly in his crib. Given a therapy doll to help get through the trauma, she accepts it as a real child — a delu - sion he goes along with for the sake of her recovery, much to his own mental and emotional peril. "You know, it's once in a blue moon that you'll get a role where you're like, 'Oh, I know who this person is,' " Kebbell says. "And then of course, it was a new platform, which was exciting and Night doing a TV series, which was a new venture, and Lauren Ambrose was already cast and I have adored her work for a long time. So it was all aces for me."
