T he sight and sound of a rooster pheasant flush- ing is one of the most exciting hunting events one can experience. If flushed close enough, the hunter can even feel the air vibrate from the frantic wing beats of the colorful game bird as it launches. A rooster flushing at close quarters can unnerve even an experienced hunter. It is also the kind of adrenaline rush that can get a novice hunter hooked on the sport. Pheasants Forever Ozau- kee/Washington County Chapter No. 680 hopes their 11th annual Novice Pheasant Hunt will give new hunters an experience with a flush- ing rooster that will lead them to a lifelong love of the outdoors. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Pheas- ants @ Large near Port Washington. Youth deer and turkey hunts and Learn to Hunt events are great for introduc- ing new and young people to hunting, but those hunts also require a lot of sitting and being quiet. Pheasant hunts are all about walking, action and even a hoot and holler or two. The social aspect of pheasant hunting with a group is also something attractive to young hunters who may have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time. The Pheasants Forever event is also unique because participants have a great chance to flush a pheasant and get a shot at a bird that was planted in the field. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with donuts, juice and coffee in the lodge. Members of Pheasants Forever will give a short hunter's safety refresher. A refresher like that is valuable for novice and experienced hunters. Safe shooting zones are especially important for pheasant hunting in a group. In general, a hunter walking on the far left can safely shoot to the left or ahead. A hunter on the extreme right can safely shoot to the right or straight ahead. Hunters in the middle can safely shoot at birds that flush more or less in front of them. After the safety refresher, hunters move outside where they will get a close look at live pheasants. For this hunt, hens and roosters can be shot. In most areas during regular hunts, only roosters can be shot. Each participant will get a shooting warm up with clay targets. Instructors will be available to help those who are not familiar with trap shooting. Many novice hunters have not experienced work- ing with hunting dogs so handlers will give a demonstration of both point- ing and flushing dogs. Then, it is off to the fields to put all that training into action. The fields at Pheasants @ Large are a mix of grass and low laying vegetation with some brush. It is relatively flat and fairly easy to walk through. Each hunter will have a mentor and a hunting dog. The mentors try to give each hunter at least two opportunities to flush a pheasant. Rob Retko from Pheasants Forever will demonstrate ways to clean and process the birds for those who took shots that connected. Lunch will be provided and the group will reconvene to share stories before every- one is dismissed around 3:30 p.m. Participants must be at least 12 years old and they must have completed a hunter's safety course. Each hunter needs to provide a shotgun and a box of No. 6 shot shells. A blaze orange hat and vest or jacket is required apparel. Advanced registration by Saturday is required.
