December 2019 NewsBeat 23 Local resident purchases 177-year-old Greenwich Journal and Salem Press T Manchester family sells newspaper group to Capital Region Independent Media C apital Region Independent Media has acquired the Manchester Newspapers and all associated digital and print products according to John Thomas Cribb, of Cribb, Greene & Cope who represented the Manchester family in the sale. Manchester Newspapers is a weekly newspaper and specialty publishing company that prints five newspapers each weekly as well as 40 plus specialty publications annually. Its parent newspaper, the Granville Sentinel, has been in the family since its founding in 1875 by James Lillie McArthur, great- grandfather of the current owner. Other newspapers included in the sale are the Whitehall Times, the North Country FreePress, the Hudson Falls FreePress and the Lakes Region FreePress. The newspapers are delivered into approximately 33,000 homes each week. Publishers John and Lisa Manchester said Capital Region Independent Media was the perfect fit for the purchase. "The new owner, Mark Vinciguerra is dedicated to continuing publishing quality, locally owned newspapers and he realizes the importance these newspapers have to the communities they serve. He also will be able to greatly enhance the digital and internet aspects of the business, which is so critical these days." B rian Cocoran has been named publisher of the Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y. He most recently served as the newspapers's regional controller and operations director as well as interim publisher since March. Corcoran began his career with the company in 2007. Prior to that, he was controller for Champlain Stone Ltd. in Warrensburg, N.Y. — Reprinted from Editor&Publisher B radley R. Waters has been named publisher of the family-owned Rome Sentinel newspapers in New York, which includes the Rome Sentinel, the Boonville Herald, the Clinton Record, and other numerous weekly and special publications. He succeeds his father, Stephen B. Waters who held the position since 1993 when he succeeded his father, George Waters. Bradley joined the newspaper in 2010 as general manager and will be the sixth generation of the family to serve as publisher. Stephen will continue to serve the company as president and editor. — Reprinted from Editor&Publisher he Greenwich Journal and Salem Press, the 177-year-old newspaper serving Southern Washington County and Schuylerville, New York, has been sold to Darren Johnson of Greenwich. He purchased the paid circulation weekly from former publisher Meghan Phalen. Phalen stopped publishing the paper October 21st, after the sudden death of her husband at age 44. Craig Phalen and his wife Meghan purchased the newspaper in 2014 from Peter Gregg. Darren Johnson worked for the Sag Harbor Express from 1995 to early 1997 and earned NYPA's Writer of the Year award during that period. He publishes Campus News, a monthly publication distributed on the campuses of community colleges in Long Island, the NYC metro area, the Hudson Valley and the Capital Region. New publishers
