Having a heart of gratitude changes our perspective of life and the events that come our way. Have you ever known anyone who is a constant complainer? You would have to agree a "grumbler" is most often miserable and unhappy. An unthankful heart can eventually lead to bitterness and hatred. So how do we develop a thankful heart? First, we must understand that everyone has a choice to be grateful. Contentment is not based on external circumstances but rather is something that begins internally. We must make a willful decision to be thankful. I have known people who have been blessed with wealth and health and yet are unhappy and discontent. On the other hand, I have known those who are less fortunate choose to be grateful for the little things in life and are a blessing to many. When a person chooses to be thankful it changes their priorities. Instead of wanting what they cannot have, they begin to want what they do have. Whether it be a meager portion or an overabundance, a thankful heart is fi ne with either. Having a grateful heart will allow us to see the real treasures in life. The English poet, John Milton, explained this truth when he wrote, "Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world."
