The Fall 2019 Learning College Student of the Semester Awards were presented during two ceremonies in the Old Tryon Room of the Isothermal Library. The ceremonies were held at noon and 5 p.m. This semester's award winners are Tiffany Parker, Abigail Hope Cash, Rebecca D. Ramsey, Halie Medlock, Jennifer Fowler, Karen "Beth" Swinkey, Marla Hoyle, Mariah Seebode-Kennedy, Hosanna Miller, Erin E. Ray, Franklin Shaffer, Fatima Ghaleb, Claire Monica Miller, Hannah West, Hailey O'Rourke, Kristy Barbeau, Lydia Kercher, Myasia Carson, Riley Lawter and Victoria Baylee Short. The awards were presented by Dr. Dolly Horton, vice president of Academic and Student Services and Institutional Assessment, Donna Hood, dean of Continuing Education, and Thad Harrill, vice president of Community and Workforce Education and Institutional Advancement. The audience was welcomed and congratulated by Pres. Walter Dalton. Each student was nominated by one or several of their instructors. The nomination forms included a section of comments about the qualifi cations of each student: Tiffany Parker College and Career Readiness Tiffany Parker is a hardworking and dedicated student. She has renewed her dedication to fi nishing her goals and completing her education. She is a single mother working full-time. She has surpassed her obstacles and the temptations to give up and quit. She wants to set an example for her son by pushing herself to complete her goals. Even when she is frustrated and tired, she won't allow herself to be defeated. With each new level and test, she pushes herself to go on to the next one and motivates herself to keep on trying. We know her hard work and determination will take her far! Abigail Hope Cash College and Career Readiness Abigail is a hard-working young lady with defi nite goals. She entered our Adult High School program running. Abigail joined us in September of 2019 and has set her sights on Graduation 2020. She has fi nished four classes already by attending both day and evening class sessions. Currently she is working on an additional three credits including a face-to-face Math 2 class. With her dedication and work ethic, she will meet her goal of Graduation 2020 and move on to her college goals. We are excited to see what the future holds for Abigail! Rebecca D. Ramsey Occupational Education Rebecca is an exemplary student. She is completely engaged in class, always questioning and striving to gain a deeper understanding of concepts. She quickly comes to the aid of students who may be struggling with learning new material. In the lab portion of class, she focuses on the small details that will make her an exceptional caregiver in the medical fi eld while never losing site of the patient's safety and comfort. And, in clinical, her genuine compassionate personality shines through to patients, families, and staff alike. Rebecca is able to connect with her patients and make them feel at ease. To see Rebecca excel in the classroom, connect the dots between what is learned in the classroom to logically perform skill steps in the lab, then to see her provide high quality care in the clinical setting makes me so proud as her instructor. Rebecca is truly deserving of the Student of the Semester Award. Halie Medlock Occupational Education Halie has a strong commitment to become a massage therapist. She is always willing to provide a helping hand and is always ready to do whatever is needed during clinical lab. She is detail oriented, hungry for knowledge and willing to give the extra effort at any given time. Jennifer Fowler Academic Development Jennifer is a dedicated, hard-working student who never misses class. She is a model student who exhibits all of the best behaviors in managing her time and getting all her work done. She has excellent study skills and has done exceptionally well in mastering the material in class. Her desire for learning and her work ethic will allow her to reach whatever educational goal she sets for herself. Jennifer is truly a joy to work with. Karen "Beth" Swinkey Academic Development Beth Swinkey is a dedicated, hard-working student, who asks thoughtful questions and exhibits a strong desire for learning. She is a model student with excellent study skills and has done exceptionally well in mastering the material in class. Her work ethic and conscientious effort will enable her to achieve her educational and career goals. Beth is truly a joy to work with. Marla Hoyle Applied Sciences & Engineering Marla balances work and school she is always pleasant and brings a positivity to the classroom. She is quirky, creative, and fun and is always willing to use those qualities to help with class projects even for fi rst year classes that she is no longer in.Her talents have allowed her to place in various competitions both on and off campus. Mariah Seebode-Kennedy Arts & Sciences Mariah is a top performing student, always engaged in class even when her peers are not – a delight to have in class! She is also an excellent representative of the college as the chemistry lab assistant, coming up with interesting ideas, such as attaching a periodic table to the lab binders that contain experiments and helping with the science expo. Mariah is a hard worker who always goes above and beyond to reach her goals. Hosanna Miller Arts & Sciences Hosanna is a pleasure to have in class. Hard working, intuitive, and striving to improve herself for the future, her delightful, enthusiastic personality helps establish a comfortable learning environment. She is punctual and inquisitive, and she possesses a top-notch work ethic on a consistent basis. Hosanna is quick to volunteer and works well with her peers within the classroom. For these reasons, and many more, Hosanna is the ideal student for this award. Erin E. Ray Business Sciences This year's recipient has been a part of the Agribusiness program since participating in the Groom Elite Program in 2015. Erin is always willing to offer her educated and well thought out opinion and what we can do to make it better serve the needs of our students. She has done this while working a very demanding full-time job. The Agribusiness Technologies Program is a better program because of the contributions Erin has made both in and out of the classroom. Franklin Shaffer Business Sciences Frank is a self-motivated, hard-working, and personable accounting student, who not only does outstanding work in each of his courses, but he also is a proven leader as President of the PBL student organization. Franks real life experiences as a military veteran brings diversity to class discussions and group work, which benefi ts everyone in the class-even the instructors! He truly is a phenomenal student and is well-deserving of this award. Fatima Ghaleb Business Sciences / Career & College Promise – Career Pathway Fatima is an outstanding student in both her high school and college classes. She demonstrates academic, extracurricular, and social commitment in all that she does and is selfl essly committed to making her campus, community, and the world around her better. As a New Century Scholar, she has contributed many volunteer service hours to the community including the Community Pet Center, Rutherford Outdoor Coalition, Camp Innovate, Women Roofers, and other church and community organizations. Claire Monica Miller Health & Public Services Claire Monica Miller has been selected as the Student of the semester because of her determination and dedication to her college courses and to herself. She received her Adult High School diploma from Isothermal Community College in December 2018. She began in the spring of 2019 in the Health Transfer program taking prerequisites for the Dental Hygiene program at Greenville Technical Community College. She will complete her general education courses at the end of the spring 2020 semester. She is an advocate for herself as well as others. An example of this was her determination to get a traditional psychology course offered in the summer when there were only online available. Due to English being her second language, she addressed that there needed to be a traditional course offered for those who learn better in a traditional setting. During this time she has maintained a 4.00 GPA. Hannah West Health & Public Services Hannah is most deserving of the Learning College Student of the Semester Award. She has quietly been working toward her degree in Early Childhood Education on a part time basis over the past few years while she worked full time at a local childcare facility. She is now nearing the end of her program and deserves to recognized for her hard work and dedication. She consistently produces a high caliber of lesson plans and activities for each of her courses and makes signifi cant contributions to in class discussions. Hannah is a joy to have in class and will continue to be a joy in working with children. Hailey O'Rourke Health & Public Services / Career & College Promise – Career Pathway Hailey is the perfect example of the Learning College Student of the Semester. She is always prepared, involved and intelligent. She is a proven leader to the rest of the class and is the fi rst to jump into lecture discussions. She is never afraid to voice her opinion or answer questions even when she is not sure of the answer. Her grades, personality, leadership and involvement in class make her an excellent candidate for The Learning College Student of the Semester. Kristy Barbeau Practical Nursing The Practical Nursing program is honored to nominate Kristy L. Barbeau for the Student of the Semester. Kristy always models courage and strength. She is a hard worker who can be depended on to do a great job. She excels at being a class leader. Kristy is the fi rst to volunteer to help others. She gives of herself by sharing knowledge with fellow students during and outside of class. The faculty has frequently observed Kristy, offering assistance to other students. When asked by her instructor to assist other students, Kristy does so without hesitation. Despite being married and having children who are active with school, Kristy manages her time well. She is not afraid to ask others outside the nursing program for help in order to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. Kristy constantly shares not only her knowledge but also her heart with her fellow classmates, instructors, and her patients. Kristy consistently demonstrates the crucial nursing qualities of integrity, compassion, and teamwork. She is an asset to the Practical Nursing program, and we have no doubt she will be an asset when she joins the nursing community. Lydia Kercher Associate Degree Nursing Lydia Kercher is currently enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program as a RIBN student (Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nursing); this means she is dually enrolled in the ADN program at ICC and is also pursuing her Bachelor of Science-Nursing at Western Carolina University. Lydia is actively involved with the SGA at ICC, is a well-rounded student who exemplifi es the characteristics important to professional nursing, and in addition carries a high GPA. Lydia always has a smile to share and serves as a role model to fellow students not only in the ADN and RIBN programs, but to all she comes in contact with. This young woman demonstrates caring and compassion to all and leaves a lasting impression upon the clients, fellow students, and community for which she serves. These qualities are the reason Lydia Kercher is deserving of the Student of the Semester Award. Myasia Carson REaCH (Rutherford Early College High School) In May, Myasia will graduate from REaCH with high honors and will complete an Associate of Arts degree from ICC. She has excelled in her studies both at the high school and college level. In addition to her educational and professional pursuits, she also invests in herself and her community outside of the classroom. Myasia participates in school volunteer efforts on the REaCH annual Day of Caring, is active in her faith community and other community groups, plays a musical instrument, and is a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success. She has also made time to serve as a volunteer at a local medical center the past three summers. She plans to attend Appalachian State University and pursue a career in the nursing fi eld, potentially as a nurse anesthetist. Riley Lawter PCEC (Polk Early College) Riley Lawter is a senior at PCEC and will graduate this May with an Associate of Arts degree from ICC, and High Honors and top of the class at PCEC. She is an incredibly hard worker with an impeccable work ethic. She will be attending Gardner-Webb University and plans on pursuing Journalism. She volunteers frequently at area churches, every year at an elementary school's Fall Festival, and with Thermal Belt Outreach's Empty Bowls event and school supply distribution. Victoria Baylee Short College and Career Promise Baylee is a Senior at East Rutherford High School. She is an excellent student known for her kindness and willingness to help others. In addition to graduating high school, Baylee will be completing an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Medical Offi ce Administration Certifi cate from ICC this spring. Baylee plans to attend Gardner-Webb University after receiving a Softball Scholarship. Baylee has gone above and beyond to reach her goals and deserves recognition for her hard work and determination.
