Mailed from Sterling, Ill. ADVANCING THE NEWS INDUSTRY WWW.NEWSPAPERS.ORG WINTER 2019 We are America's Newspapers BY MARK FITZGERALD A merica's Newspapers was born with a mission as expansive as the reach of newspapers themselves. This mission is to explain, defend and advance the vital role newspapers play in our local communities, our nation and our democracy. Education is at the core of America's Newspapers — educating the public about their stake in news- papers' future, educating local businesses about the reach and effectiveness of our products and services, and educating members on the trends, strategies and best practices for a sustainable path to prosperity. A fundamental educational task for America's News- papers is simply letting the public know what news- papers are. "Newspapers are much more than the print news- paper you see on your front steps or convenience store shelf," said America's Newspapers first president, Chris Reen, the president of The Gazette in Colorado Springs. "We publish our news and entertainment on your computer, your tablet, your phone, and even smart devices like Alexa," he said. "We help local retailers and businesses grow not just with ads in our multi- media outlets, but with our digital marketing services." Newspapers not only field the largest number of jour- nalists of any news media organization in any given community — they are also the largest producer of events and other experiential opportunities in their markets. And against the drumbeat of cynical cries about "fake news" and false accusations of media fabrica- tions, America's Newspapers will provide constant reminders that newspapers represent journalistic integrity with accuracy, fairness, ethics and trans- parency.
