People seem surprised when they find out
that I don't own a car.
"how do you get groceries?" is usually the
first question they ask.
It's actually pretty easy, I tell them.
I walk a few blocks from my house to the
broad street market, which is exactly what
I did when I had a car. so, nothing much has
changed.
I shop locally in harrisburg not really because
it's the right thing to do, but because, for me,
it's the best thing to do.
shopping at the market has actually improved
my diet, as everything I buy now is some
combination of locally grown, homemade,
organic and/or small batch. Yes, I spend a bit
more than I would at the supermarket, but, as
they say, you get what you pay for and, wow, I
never thought I would eat so well.
Also, my shopping experience has gone from
drudgery to joy. Like many of you, I loathed
the cold, bland sterility of the supermarket,
not to mention the mind-numbing routine
and death-defying parking lot. but the broad
street market has shown me that grocery
shopping can actually be pleasurable—I might
even say fun—especially when it turns into an
impromptu social occasion, which is often.
I mention my experience because our
november issue is focused on shopping local,
which is a great fit for a community-focused
publication like theburg.
this month, we have stories on a number
of local shops, eateries and other fun spots
to spend some time and some dough. Also,
please check out the special "shop Local"
spread, where you'll find numerous gift ideas
for the holidays, all beautifully photographed
and presented.
otherwise, you'll discover an array of
community news, features, events and
columns in our issue, as always. It's my hope
that, somewhere within these pages, you'll find
an item that's surprising or even inspiring—
something you didn't know and maybe even
something you want to do.
of course, november is also a month of
thanks. so, to wrap this up, I'd like to extend an
enormous "thank you" to everyone who picks
up theburg, who regularly reads our stories,
who buys from our advertisers and who keeps
us going month after month. we exist only
because of you.
