October 26 - November 1, 2019—3 The Greeneville Sun, Greeneville, TN The Greeneville Sun, Greeneville, TN October 26 - November 1, 2019 — 3 2 x 3.5" ad a) greene cnty farmers b) swango's 2 x 4" ad williams electric 2 x 1.5" ad ymca 2 x 1.5" ad doughty stevens By Jay Bobbin Whether spoofing "I Love Lucy" or "Game of Thrones," Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest know they'll have elaborate, costumed fun on Halloween. The Oct. 31 episode is an an- nual highlight for "Live With Kelly and Ryan," and the syn- dicated weekday program does it again Thursday by satirizing viral videos. While it will mark "American Idol" staple Seacrest's third round since joining the traditionally high-rated talk show, Ripa is an 18-year veteran of "Live" ... and last year, she enjoyed reuniting with "All My Children" castmates in a Hal- loween parody of her former daytime serial. Also involving studio-audi- ence members by encouraging them to dress up for a contest, the hosts talked about their Halloween history for this article. Q: Since you still act occa- sionally, Kelly, do the Hallow- een skits help service that yen for you? Ripa: It's truly one of the reasons I think I've been able to work here for so many years, knowing that we have the Hal- loween show coming up. It satisfies that tiny, remaining bit of creativity I have left — and a little-known fact about Ryan is that as good a broadcaster as he is, he could have been an incredible actor, had he wanted to take a substantial pay cut. He understands what it takes to embody another person, and I love working with him. Q: Ryan, are you used to the show's Halloween shenanigans by now? Seacrest: Well, you know, it's funny. One of the things that first went through my head, be- cause I'd watched the show for so many years, was (doing) the Halloween special. I thought, "How great is it going to be that the two of us will get to dress up and pull off some of these pop-cultural skits?" Then I got to the show and started to work on them, and I realized how laborious it is ... so now, I'm a little intimidated by what we might be asked to do on the air. Q: What was Halloween like for the two of you as kids? Ripa: Halloween is still my favorite holiday. I really liked it when my kids were young — we did great costumes, and I got to watch them grow up on the show — but for me, I was just whatever my ballet costume was the summer before. It was not very well thought out, it was just whatever we had in the closet. Seacrest: It was pretty much the same every year. We'd go to a neighborhood clubhouse and watch a scary magician do tricks, then my father would come home early from work to take me out with my pillowcase to collect as many King Size Reese's as I could. Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop 'Live With Kelly and Ryan' aims for an- other happy Halloween Cover Story Cover Story By Michelle Wilson It's that time of year ... the foliage is in full display, the fields are ripe for harvest and the leaves are perfect for piles. That also means it's the season for "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," cropping up Sun - day, Oct. 27, on ABC. The thumb-sucking, blanket- wielding youngster Linus can be first be seen trying to satisfy his very bossy sister, Lucy, as she chooses the best pumpkin out of the bounty. Af - ter she refuses the first couple of op- tions, Linus picks her a winner with an almost perfect specimen that's far too big for him to lug all the way back to the house. Leave it to Linus and his creative thinking to roll it to the doorstep instead of carrying it. He's horrified, however, when Lucy starts carving it up, not realizing she was "going to kill it." Good grief! As much as most youngsters feel a sense of magic during Christ - mastime, Linus remains rooted in his belief of The Great Pumpkin, Checking in with Linus Van Pelt complete with writing and mailing a letter to the imaginary character, despite much ridicule (and even a physical threat of "pounding") from family and friends. Let's give him credit for not buckling under peer pressure when it comes to the greater publicity of "that fella with the red suit and the white beard who goes, 'Ho, ho, ho.' " Every Halloween night, Linus faithfully sits in his patch, missing out on the typical holiday festivities, waiting for The Great Pumpkin to rise with "his bag full of toys for all the good little children eveywhere." Despite his continued disappoint - ment year after year, he trudges on, aiming to have an even more "sincere" crop the following year. You can be sure they'll be no signs of hypocrisy. Linus may rely on a piece of blue material to comfort him in life, but at least he's secure in his sincerity. Full name: Linus Van Pelt First official appearance: Sept. 19, 1952, in a comic strip Created by: Charles M. Schulz Best friend: Charlie Brown A favorite activity: Singing pumpkin carols Biggest fan: Sally, who shows her love and devotion to him by lingering in the pumpkin patch, ultimately missing out on "tricks- or-treats" and Violet's annual Halloween party. Her admira- tion is short-lived, at least in this special, when the desired result doesn't happen. She then threat- ens to "sue" and "demands restitution." Other credits include: "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965), "Char - lie Brown's All-Stars!" (1966), "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (1973), just to name a few Fun fact: This Halloween special originally aired Oct. 27, 1966, and received a 49% share of the viewership — impressive, con - sidering there were only three networks at the time. 921 W.
