Some just barely distinguishable as frag- ments of orange peeked from the sand. Others, incredibly untouched, as if just plucked from the sky. I couldn't help but surmise that some had sim- ply dropped from flight, exhausted from battling fierce coastal winds. Yet instead of finding food and respite, they found a cruel ecosystem devoid of shelter for a fragile winged insect. I began to wonder if it would be envi- ronmentally sound to add milkweed to the dune grasses, which are so essen- tial in erosion prevention. (Months later, I got my answer. The town of Belmar did just this—implementing milkweed and other pollen-rich plants at its Fourth Avenue 'dune garden!') Metamorphosis She hid caterpillars in rusted cans, put the open end in a hole of the wall. No escape. Yet they drew breath… What did she know of mysteries? Days later, kneeling before the wall, she found no caterpillars in the untouched can. Now she searches the world for butterflies. —Frank Finale The Jar I loved your bold orange black & white since childhood when I stalked you. You dazzled my eyes. I tried to capture you, and did; put you in a jelly jar with holes in its tin top, showed you to my mom. She said, a wry smile on her butterfly beautiful face, You should set them free. They'll die in that jar. I knew so little then loved what she knew. I was eight when she died. I remember those monarchs I set free into a blue summer. The empty jar I held, on our green lawn. —Frank Finale HOME PORT THE BEACHSCAPE, continued from page 66 Frank Finale is the author of the coffee table books "To The Shore Once More, Volumes I - III" and "A Gull's Story, Parts 1 - 3." Jill Lang Before long, I had a collection of photographs depicting their felled splendor, a testament to the perils of their miraculous annual journey. It was so incredibly sad, yet a perverse honor to be able to touch and exam- ine them so closely. I can only hope to never encounter such a phenome- non again.
