About a year ago, I received an email from a
neighbor.
russ wanted to know if I knew who was
responsible for the "street art" he had seen
going up around harrisburg over the past few
years.
"the murals?" I responded back.
he said, "yes," explaining that his wife nancy
always wanted a mural painted on the side of
the brick carriage house in back of their home.
he wished to give her that present for her
birthday.
of course I knew, as the person responsible
for the "street art" was theburg's very own
creative director, megan caruso. I helped
connect them and, today, a stunning new mural,
featuring the images of five actual harrisburg
children, adorns the side of the carriage house,
offering both the gift of a lifetime to nancy
and, not incidentally, a profound contribution
to our entire neighborhood.
many great stories arose from last month's
harrisburg mural Festival, but that, perhaps for
personal reasons, is my favorite one.
A million thanks to russ and nancy, as well as
to meg and her fellow volunteers at sprocket
mural works for the city's 14 new murals—some
40 murals created in all over the past few years.
what I also like about this story is that,
sometimes, you throw a bottle into the ocean,
and you never know where it's going to end up.
some 11 years ago, a friend and I had an
idea to begin a small community newspaper
for harrisburg. today, that "small" paper has
grown enormously, spanning seven counties
and a popular online news site. theburg's
hard-working staff also runs events, sits on
panels, emcees forums and tries to contribute
positively however we can.
And, at times, we simply connect this person
with that person. the next thing you know,
something wonderful, and unexpected, has
happened.
I think you'll find many wonderful and
unexpected things in our october issue. this
time, we focus on fun fall activities in and
around central PA—from a pet event to a horse
show to great places for a beer or a hike.
In this area, autumn is arguably our finest
season—the weather is still nice, events are
many, and the colors are spectacular. we hope
theburg helps connect you to at least one
amazing experience this month.
