But, introducing new characters and bidding farewell to old ones could be the kiss of death, even for the most beloved series. Not so with the reality television genre -- sometimes, it seems, injecting a little fresh blood can be a good thing. Fans of NBCs The Voice are in for some new faces when the hit series returns Monday, March 25. Coaches CeeLo Green and Christina Aguilera, whove both been with the series since the beginning, are taking a break from the show, and Grammy winners Shakira and Usher are ready to sit in the big red chairs alongside veteran coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. Inspired by the series The Voice of Holland, NBCs hit assembles a roster of up-andcoming singers and gives them the opportunity to perform a blind audition for celebrity coaches who can only hear them, not see them. The stars then choose teams and guide the would-be vocalists through a competition that includes battle rounds and live performance shows. The March debut marks the beginning of Season 4, which airs on the heels of this falls edition. Previously, the show only ran one cycle during the regular fall to spring TV season, but The Voice has proved to be such a ratings winner for NBC, its no surprise its back so soon. Therein lies the problem, however, for Green and Aguilera. NBC exec Robert Greenblatt and executive producer Mark Burnett explained that doubling up the seasons means a tremendous time commitment from the artists and that they had no problem allowing them to focus on other facets of their careers. Aguilera is taking time to tour and focus on promoting her new album, Lotus, which was released in November. I am a singer and performer first and I am so excited to get back to that love, said Aguilera. Since this year NBC and The Voice have decided to tape backto-back seasons, requiring a fullyear commitment, it is important for me to take Season 4 off, allowing me to support my music that my fans have been waiting for. With a Las Vegas show, new albums, a memoir and a new comedy in the works, Green also expressed gratitude for being able to take the time to focus on some of his other endeavors, promising I will return for Season 5 and will be watching Season 4. Greens fans are likely heartened by his assurances hell return. In the meantime, fans of Shakira and Usher can tune in for a look at how they will handle their new jobs as coaches.
