Employee Sought The International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors spotlighted Ferdinand News and Spencer County Leader publisher and editor Kathy Tretter in a pro- file for their newsletter. Tretter shared thoughts on her newspapers including: Your greatest challenge: Time – there is never enough hours in the day nor days in the week. Our readers, businesses and community organizations expect us to show up for virtually everything and we really try to accommodate these requests, but of course it's impossible. Newspaper's biggest strength: A dedicated staff of caring individuals who are proud of what we do. It shows in the finished product. And not to put too fine a point on it, loyal readers. We also produce around 40 special sections every year, generating the content ourselves rather than relying on canned copy. For instance, our bridal editions feature a couple from their first meeting to their honeymoon, along with features centered around local offerings. We started this about 25 years ago because the canned copy just didn't meet the needs of our readers. We do something similar for Home Improvement. Our Veterans Day issues share the story of real heroes living right here. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the gist. What is your favorite journalism accomplishment?: After 30-plus years it's hard to single something out, but when we won Blue Ribbon in the Hoosier State Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest it was a real thrill. That is the highest accolade given to one daily and one community newspaper annu- ally and I always figured the conglomerates had a much better shot, so when we won the second time we were nominated (2016) it was quite a thrill. On a per- sonal note I won several awards, including one from the American Medical Association, for a piece on Hepatitis C. To read the entire profile, visit http://bit.ly/2lZm3f3.
