She works with homeowners on everything from Azaleas to Zucchini, helping educate them on best management practices in all areas of horti- culture. Having access to research-based in- formation from NC State University positions Julie to serve as the resident expert on land- scape design, plant selection and placement, fertility, insect and disease pressure, weed identifi cation and control, and much more. In addition to working with homeowners, Ju- lie coordinates the award-winning Cleveland County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. Prior to Julie's arrival in 2011, Cleve- land County didn't have the program. Since 2012, sixty-seven (67) county residents have graduated from Julie's annual classes, earn- ing the status of Certifi ed Extension Master Gardener. The Extension Master Gardener Program teaches local residents about establishing and maintaining gardens, lawns, landscapes, and houseplants in ways that protect health and natural resources. This knowledge prepares Master Gardeners to educate and advise others, and to volunteer is ways that make a difference in the local community. After com- pleting an intensive 6-week course of instruc- tion, students become Interns. They are then able to join the Extension Master Gardener Association of Cleveland County, which now boasts a membership of 50. After complet- ing 40 volunteer hours within the fi rst year, in- terns become certifi ed and can maintain that certifi cation by volunteering at least 20 hours of approved work per year. Master Gardener V o l u n t e e r s are an inte- gral part of the Consum- er Horticul- ture program in Cleveland County, help- ing extending the work done by the Agent, Ms. Flowers. It is quite a p p r o p r i - ate that our h o r t i c u l t u r e agent's last name is "Flowers". Julie enjoys sharing that her grandmother's maiden name was "Ivey". Upon marrying Julie's grandfather, she be- came Dorothy Ivey Flowers! Julie grew up in Catawba County, where she gardened next to her father, Conrad (famous for his prized tomatoes) and of course, her grandparents, Dorothy and Ralph Flowers. Each year Julie's elementary school class would walk to her grandparents' home to admire their amazing display of fl owering azaleas. Needless to say, gardening isn't just in her name, it's in her blood. Julie has a passion for educating on the subject as well. If you'd like to learn more about the Exten- sion Master Gardener Program in Cleveland County, or simply have a gardening question, you can reach Julie Flowers at (704) 482- 4365 or Julie_fl owers@ncsu.edu.
