DENTISTS: ORAL CARE VITAL FOR AGING PATIENTS According to the U.S. Administration on Aging, the population of Americans older than 65 years is expected to double to about 71 million by 2040 and the number of those over age 85 will increase to 9.6 million by 2030. Raleigh dentist Dr. Gary Oyster underscores the connection between a healthy mouth and overall health at any age. "Fortunately for most elderly patients, oral care can be an ongoing activity that can prevent serious health problems during aging. It's as simple as routine brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups. Older patients can make their teeth last a lifetime if they make smart choices about oral habits at home, good nutrition and regular care from a dentist." Not only are teeth important to speaking, smiling, chewing and appearance, oral disease can greatly affect general health. "Studies have linked infections in the mouth to heart disease and a variety of other serious health risks, so whether older individuals have their natural teeth, implants or wear dentures, they need to pay careful attention to routine, preventive care." The American Dental Association (ADA) and the N.C. Dental Society offer special resources to support aging consumers and their caregivers. The ADA's OralLongevity initiative, launched in 2007, (www.ada. org/OralLongevity.aspx) provides a host of useful information, including an instructional brochure and DVD, on topics such as: Dry mouth, Cavities after 60, Oral cancer, Dentures and implants, Daily mouth care, The effects of diabetes, arthritis and medications on oral health, Dr. Oyster offers a few tips of his own relating to effective oral care for seniors. "Daily brushing and flossing are just as important as when you were a youngster," he says. "Choose an ADA-approved toothbrush with soft bristles and if you have some upper body mobility issues, consider using an electric toothbrush. Clean between the teeth daily with floss or other interdental cleaners such as picks or brushes. If you wear dentures, be sure to clean them every day with recommended denture cleaners and soaking solutions . Take the dentures out of your mouth for at least four hours every and be sure to remove them at night to allow mouth tissues to rejuvenate." Dr. Oyster also recommends that older patients quit smoking. "Smoking increases problems with gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss. It also affects healing after dental procedures and the retention of dental implants." Finally, regular dental checkups are a must for seniors. "It's important to keep your dentist up to date on your medical conditions and allergies, medications including vitamin supplements, all your current health care providers and contact information, and emergency contacts." "The bottom line," says Oyster, "is that seniors should continue the same good oral health habits throughout their lives with the proviso that dental problems later in life can worsen other medical conditions that develop during aging. The routine's the same, it's just that the stakes are higher." Additional information about oral health for seniors is available at www.ADA.org or www.ncdental.org.
