How long has that series been on the air? — Elaine Smith, via e-mail A: The original pro- gram — whose Arielle Vandenberg-hosted U.S. version did a lot to boost the younger demograph- ics of CBS viewership over its month-long, almost-every-night sum- mer run — started in Eng- land in 2005 and initially ran for two seasons, an interesting twist being that celebrities were the participants rather than everyday people. Most of those players (and yes, we mean that in more than one way) probably would be unknown to the American market, but one was actress-model Nikki Ziering, the ex-wife of "Beverly Hills, 90210" veteran Ian Ziering. "Love Island" then re- turned to British televi- sion in 2015, but not ce- lebrity-driven — and it's been on every summer since then, including this a first-look deal for her company's product. Q: I read that Mandy Moore now has her first Emmy nomination, but wasn't she on other shows before "This Is Us"? — Kel- lie Clark, Grafton, Ohio A: Yes, but the NBC drama marks her first job as a series regular apart from the consider- able animation-voiceover work she's done for Dis- ney Channel. Moore had made pilots that didn't sell in earlier seasons, and she had guest arcs on such series as "En- tourage" (playing a ver- sion of herself), "Grey's Anatomy" and "Red Band Society." She also has another presumably lucrative television job these days, pitching hair- color products in ads. Q: Someone told me Naomi Watts starred in a TV series before she be- came a movie star. What was it? — Roger Clay, via e-mail A: Well before her television stops of late in Showtime's "The Loudest Voice" and "Twin Peaks" and Netflix's "Gypsy," one. After last year saw enhanced controversy with the suicide deaths of a couple of earlier par- ticipants, and the produc- ers promising counseling services for the "Island- ers" going forward, the overseas show's fifth-sea- son premiere this past June had record-break- ing numbers for the net- work ITV2. Q: What is Kaley Cuoco going to do, now that "The Big Bang Theory" is over? — Gary Crane, Albuquer- que, N.M. A: Actually, she's go- ing to be pretty busy with a number of proj- ects. She's an executive producer and voice-cast member of DC Universe's upcoming animated se- ries "Harley Quinn"; and she's developing ideas for her new production company (named Yes, Norman ... after her dog), including "The Flight At- tendant," an adaptation of a novel in which she'll star for the forthcoming streaming service HBO Max. Warner Bros. Tele- vision, which made "The Big Bang Theory," has Watts was a regular in a 1997-98 NBC melodra- ma called "Sleepwalk- ers." She played one of several researchers who could insert themselves into the dreams or night- mares of others, with Bruce Greenwood ("The Resident") also among the show's stars. Before that, Watts appeared on some Aus- tralian shows including "Home and Away," one of that land's most popular programs — to the extent that it's still running, after having debuted in 1988. (That's not a typo.) She had a recurring role on the serial in the early 1990s, as one of a num- ber of talents who would become famous alumni of it ... with Chris Hem- sworth, Isla Fisher, Ju- lian McMahon, Melissa George and Ryan Kwant- en also among them. BY JOHN CROOK (THISCOLUMNREPRESENTSON AIR SUMMARIES FOR THE WEEK OF AUG. 5-9, 2019.) THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Flo tried to get Wyatt to understand why she lied to everyone. Liam told Hope that Beth was still alive as Thomas pounded on the office door. Ridge assured Steffy that she is Phoebe's mother. Hope and Liam wept with joy as she was reunited with Beth. Shauna tried to dissuade Flo from her desire to spill the entire truth to Brooke. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Gabi dropped a bombshell on Stefan, while Rex challenged Eric over his feelings for Sarah. Tragedy ensued as Ted confronted Tony and Kristen. Eli decided to accept Jack's offer, while Gabi was remorseful for betraying Stefan. Kristen was caught in the act as she tried to destroy incriminating evidence. Sarah and Eric finally declared their love for each other. Stefan was arrested for murder. Brady succumbed to the advances of "Nicole." GENERAL HOSPITAL Shiloh presented Jason with a decision, and Drew made a call to Sonny. Cameron was caught off guard by Joss, while Neil and Alexis grew closer. Lucy took Sasha hunting for an apartment, and Shiloh was growing desperate over another matter. Franco expressed his gratitude to Scott. Sasha took Maxie into her confidence, while someone sent flowers to Nina. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Theo continued trying to force a friendship with Kyle, insisting on throwing a bachelor party for him. When Kyle quickly rejected that offer and vented about it to Mariah, she offered to throw him and Lola a joint bachelor-bachelorette party instead. When Kyle gratefully accepted and put Mariah in charge of planning that event, he ruffled Abby's feathers, since as maid of honor she had been planning the bachelorette bash.
