Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all came out. It was defi nitely a big community event. Malcolm Brown auditorium was packed! The special occasion was the 15th anniversary of The Academy Of The Performing Arts annual “Big Recital”. There were two shows, a matinee and evening performance. This years’ theme was “Hearts United for the Love of Dance”. An amazing 35 acts, each with a different theme, were presented on stage. The fi nal “Rise Up” was the full company together in celebration. The band played and balloons dropped to the excitement and fun of all the dancers. A standing ovation came from a most apprecia- tive audience. Founder, instructor, and owner, Beth Mayo was ec- static! The former member of “Cats” on Broadway and performer, choreographer, and actor in national and international tours in- cluding Radio City Music Hall, the White House and Universal Studios, obviously loves what she does! She thanked and joined her students in a special 15 year celebration of dance! –M. A. Marshall Tucker Band Benefi t At GWU On Saturday, May 22nd over 100 horseback riders participated in the second an- nual “Equestrians For The Cure” fundraiser to benefi t Multiple Sclerosis. The event started at Bar H Arena in Boiling Springs at 10 a.m. then headed to and along the Broad River Greenway. Each Rider donated $25.00 to participate. The total amount raised, $3,511.00, more than doubled last year’s $1,500.00! If you would like more information about the ride or want to get involved next year, call Jenene Philbeck at 704-418-2664. After a rousing performance of the opening band, “Power Dam”, the crowd rose to their feet to welcome the Mar- shall Tucker Band! The Southern rock band shook the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center at Gardner-Webb Univer- sity last Saturday eve- ning to raise money for CRKA. The band was formed in Spar- tanburg, S. C. in 1971. Their peak came in 1977 with the million-selling album “Carolina Dreams” and its Top 15 single “Heard It In A Love Song”, and they continue to perform, write, record and tour.
