Apparently, I annoy some people.
well, at least one guy, anyway, who
recently sent me an e-mail to tell me
how stupid, deluded and incompetent
I was.
thanks. I'll put that on my résumé.
he had a problem with the fact that
I didn't hate harrisburg (as he did)
and was doubly annoyed that I could
report bad news (like the school district
problems) and still love life here.
I'm so maddening!
now, I respect my e-mailer's viewpoint,
even though he doesn't live in the city
and, by his own admission, doesn't visit
either. but I likewise ask that he respect
mine, since, on the topic of harrisburg,
Pa., I just may be able to offer a well-
informed opinion.
From deindustrialization and
depopulation to floods and bad
leadership, harrisburg has had its share
of problems for, oh, the last 70 or so
years, and, in theburg, we've covered
and discussed them again and again.
but there's no question that the city
is on a huge upswing. It's a remarkably
better, more livable place than just a
decade ago, and, I believe, has a very
promising future.
speaking of promising futures—our
August issue is dedicated, as always,
to our area's youth. In this edition,
you'll meet a number of impressive
young people, both inside the city and
out. they're discovering their talents,
learning important skills and already
achieving their dreams, though their
lives are just beginning.
It's my hope that they'll stick around
and contribute to the benefit of their
hometown. we may have come a long
way, but there's still much work to do
