SPORTS Page 8A FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY MARCH 2013 Crone captures another state championship Arrowhead senior wins 132 title By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff MADISON Andrew Crone wanted to finish with a bang. He certainly did just that. Crone, a senior at Arrowhead High School, finished his prep wrestling career with a 132-pound title at the WIAA Division 1 state individual tournament. He did so with a 7-2 victory over previously unbeaten Joe Umlauf of Wausau West in the title match last month at the Kohl Center. Just thinking that this was my last match at Arrowhead, I knew I had to give it everything Ive got, Crone said. Just because hes ranked ahead of me doesnt mean I dont expect to beat him. Ive beaten a lot of really good kids. Records mean nothing. Zeros on your record mean nothing. It feels good to give Mary Langenfeld/Special to The Freeman him his first loss. Arrowheads Andrew Crone wrestles Joe Umlauf of Wausau West It was the second state title in the 132-pound title match at the WIAA Division 1 state meet. for Crone, who won the 103 title as a sophomore. A back injury bumped Crone from the medal stand last season. There was a little more pressure, but this feels just as good, Crone said of comparing the two titles. To win my last match like that feels really good. I couldnt really control last year, got hurt in the first round and didnt wrestle to the best of my ability This . year, Ive been wrestling good and knew that if I do what I can Id finish on top. Crone led 2-1 after the first period after Umlauf scored an escape in the closing seconds. After an Umlauf escape to start the second period, Crone took him down again for a 4-2 lead entering the third. Crone escaped early in the third period and scored another takedown for the final 7-2 decision. I went in with a game plan and knew what he was going to do, Crone said of Umlauf. He did exactly what I thought hed do. I expected to do as well as I did. Crone, whose two losses came to opponents from Illinois, will wrestle at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin next season. He enjoyed finishing high school in the same city hell be attending college even if the Badgers wrestle in the field house and not the Kohl Center. Its pretty awesome, he said. I couldnt go to a better school next year. Its been my dream to go to Madison since I was in kindergarten. I didnt expect to go in wrestling, but its pretty amazing being able to do that. Arrowhead senior Mitchell Berenz also entered the tournament with thoughts of competing for the title at 145. After a quarterfinal loss, Berenz had to refocus and he battled his way back to third place. it was kind of a disappointment not being able to get on top, Berenz said. I got back to the hotel (the first) night and I thought, Im not able to take first, but why go out losing everything? I can still take third. I knew every match was a battle, and I knew I had to push through. Berenz finished the tournament with a 7-0 victory over West Bend East sophomore Jordan Gundrum in the third-place match. St. Johns Northwestern senior Jordan Newman wasnt sure hed be wrestling in the Division 2 state tournament. While he didnt know the initial injury at the time, Newman tore the meniscus in his right knee while wrestling about a month before state. A week later, he was doing pool work and the knee locked up on him. His meniscus got dislodged and stuck behind his kneecap, requiring surgery . Im still not 100 percent better, but I wanted to do the best I could, he said. Newman suffered his first loss of the season in the quarterfinals, but he rebounded to finish third at 170. It feels good to take third, he said. I really wish I was in the first-place match against (eventual state champion Oconto Falls senior Jordan Morrissey). Thats what I was planning on all year. I wish I was in that finals match. Email: dmike@conleynet.com would like to thank our fair sponsors for helping to make our fair a success Healthy legs are just a phone call away...
