The cult-favorite mystery series that made Kristen Bell a star fol- lowed its three-season UPN/CW run with a Kickstarter-funded movie seven years later, and now — 15 years after it first appeared — it returns with new episodes that Hulu begins streaming Fri- day, July 26. In what effectively is Season 4 of the show, Veronica probes lethal attacks in her Cali- fornia town of Neptune during spring break, complicated by the area's social classes' struggle between profit and safety. As was the case with the movie, creator and executive producer Rob Thomas has regathered much of the original cast includ- ing Enrico Colantoni (alias Ve- ronica's private-eye father Keith), Jason Dohring (Logan), Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Francis Capra (Weevil), Max Greenfield (Leo), Ken Marino (Vinnie Van Lowe) and Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas). Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, Patton Oswalt, Dawnn Lewis and Mary Mc- Donnell ("Major Crimes") are newcomers to the saga. "I'm grateful for this longev- ity," co-star Colantoni reflects. "I always say that the more time you spend with a character, the better you are at playing that character. Knowing and revisiting these peo- ple, it just makes going to work so much better and so much richer. I'm sure that if someone had told us 15 years ago this would be hap- pening, it would be really hard to believe. Well, maybe not for Rob; he's the perpetual optimist." Much as Veronica remains who she's always been, the pleas- ant Colantoni takes pride in being able to apply the same view to the actress who plays her: "There's nothing apathetic or lazy about Kristen Bell. She comes to work and she's ready to dance, and her life is so much bigger than it was 15 years ago ... not only with her celebrity and her fame, but with her family life, managing two children. She is a busy, busy person, but she has all the energy in the world. I don't know how she does it, but I've never seen her with her eyes closed between set-ups." Also a director now (with "iZombie" episodes among his credits), former "Flashpoint" star Colantoni admits that he can't predict whether more "Veronica Mars" is in the cards, especially given the franchise's history. "Rob Thomas has a vision for this woman," he says, "and as long as females can exist as the way of the world, I believe him. Rob always thought the father- daughter relationship was the heart of the show. I can reference things like 'Frasier,' and I'm like, 'Yeah! I'll do that. Give me an old chair to sit on, and I'll live the rest of my life playing that guy." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop 'Veronica Mars' returns with Kristen Bell in new Hulu episodes Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie Karl Urban laughs at the sug- gestion that his character in the irrevent new Amazon superhero series "The Boys" is a rogue. "Yeah, I think that's a great adjective," the affable New Zea- lander says. "He's a rogue, he's a scoundrel. (There are doubts about) whether he's trustworthy or not. And he's the kind of character that nine times out of 10 you're hoping is going to make the right decision but more often than not will make the wrong decision." Premiering Friday, July 26, the series takes place in a world where superheroes have celebrity status and all the trappings that come with it, including agents, endorsement deals and talk-show appearances. On the down side, they're also very human and sus- Checking in with Karl Urban ceptible to corruption, and when that happens "The Boys" take action to rein them in. Urban plays Billy Butcher, a detective type of dubious mo- tives who comes to the aid of a young computer store worker (Jack Quaid) after a superhero accidently kills his girlfriend, then bolts the scene. In the opening episode, that eventually leads him into a fight scene with an invisible character, in which Urban had to rely on his imagination to react to what was coming at him. "Oh my gosh, I've never shot anything quite like it," says Ur- ban, who gained acclaim for his portrayal of Dr. Bones McCoy in the "Star Trek" movie reboots. "You know, usually when you are shooting a fight sequence, you're fighting against someone and it's kind of like a choreographed dance. But in this instance we shot it multiple times. The first time was with someone and then we did multiple passes where I was fighting against no one. And that is actually more dif- ficult than you'd think because typically you're reacting to what's coming at you. But when you have to imagine what's coming at you and remembering it, it's a whole lot harder."
