Carved into the solid rock cliff face, a 198-foot tunnel led into the mountain to a 258-foot elevator shaft. This massive construction project took eight tons of dynamite and 18 months to complete. The elevator was offi cially opened to the public in May of 1949. It had been re-constructed and updated over the years since, but when the State purchased the Park in 2007, it was defi nitely due for an upgrade. In late 2010, the elevator was closed for renovation and two years later was re-opened to the public. Unfortunately, due to power issues and other unforeseen problems, the decision was made to close the elevator in 2015 until a permanent solution could be found. Finally, in June of 2018, Otis Elevator Company installed a brand-new, state-of-the-art elevator that can now transport guests 26-stories up in just 32 seconds. This month marks the offi cial one-year anniversary of this signifi cant enhancement, which has been successfully operating ever since. It conveniently allows all guests easy access to the spectacular views of the Chimney, Lake Lure, and the Hickory Nut Gorge.
