James Capozella photo Matrix tech maintenance contract terminated By Andy Heuring Pike County Commission- ers terminated their technol- ogy maintenance contract and scheduled a hearing on vacating an alley in Alford. Commissioners voted 3-0 to notify Matrix they would be terminating their con- tract. Pike County, last year, hired Matrix as their technol- ogy manager for county offic- es. Auditor Judy Gumbel said they called it their "E-man- agement contract." "We have had several dis- cussions with officeholders and people in county about this," said Commissioner president Mark Flint. He add- ed, according to the county's contract, they had to give a two-month notice to end the contract. Gumbel said in the process of purchasing a new server for the courthouse, which they bought from Eck-Mun- dy, they received "an unsolic- ited" bid to provide the same service from Eck-Mundy. Gumbel said it would be her preference to go with Eck-Mundy. County Sheriff Kent John- son, before the vote was tak- en, said he wanted to make sure this didn't prevent him from using another vendor for some of his specialized equipment in the jail and sheriff's department. He was told it would not af- fect those contracts. No decision was made on Matrix's replacement. Gumbel said, "The ma- jority have been less than pleased with the perfor- mance." A public hearing to receive comment on closing four plot- ted unimproved roadways in Alford has been scheduled for the commissioners' next meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday, August 5. Joe Warner and Rich Coan, who own the property bor- dering the proposed road clo- sures, requested sections be closed. The sections of road are: an alley east of Alford Locust St., a portion of Car- penter St., an alley east of Al- ford Locust St., and a portion of Alford Thomas St. Auditor Gumbel requested an ordinance that would con- solidate employee anniversa- ry dates into July 1. She said Pike County has numerous tiers of pay throughout the county and each employee had different anniversary dates that acti- vated different tiers. She pro- posed a system that would move the anniversary dates to July 1. She said employ- ees would not lose any time or benefits by making the change. The commissioners voted to approve it. However, coun- ty attorney Val Fleig said the ordinance would also need to be approved by the coun- ty council. EMS Director Chris Young was granted permission to travel to North Carolina next week. Young said the ambu- lance the county ordered is ready to be inspected. The county requires ap- proval by the commissioners to allow out-of-state travel. net edition pressdispatch.net/edition Web, Smartphone, Tablet Streamline the Headline! 812-354-8500 • 820 Poplar St., Petersburg, IN • ads@pressdispatch.net Bucshon visits Petersburg Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon visited Petersburg recently. Otwell teen injured in ATV crash A Huntingburg teen was in- jured Saturday afternoon when he hit a deer while riding his four-wheeler in the Otwell Bot- toms. Indiana Conservation Of- ficer Ken Tincher said Nigel Parson, 18, was riding with a buddy on separate four-wheel- ers on CR575N at about 35 to 40 mph when a deer ran in front of him. Officer Tinch- er said Parson's four-wheel- er went airborne upon impact with the deer and Parsons was thrown from the vehicle. He suffered a broken collar bone. The deer was killed and Par- son's four-wheeler sustained heavy damage in the 4:50 p.m. crash. Officer Tincher said Par- son was wearing a helmet and chest protector and that helped reduce his injuries. "He was very lucky," said Tincher.
