Poplar Street, Petersburg Every true believer knows we are saved by grace through faith, apart from good works (Rom. 4:5; Titus 3:5). This does not mean, however, that good works have no place in the dispensation of grace, for right after affirming that we are saved without works (Eph. 2:8,9), Paul quickly asserts that, as new creatures in Christ (II Cor. 5:17), we are created to walk in the good works He has ordained for us (Eph. 2:10). If you have ever wondered what kind of works God expects us to "maintain" (Titus 3:8,14) in our Christian walk, we hope the following brief study of the phrase "good work(s)" in Scripture will help. FOR THE LADIES To begin with, in Acts 9 we meet Dorcas, a woman "full of good works" (9:36). She was evidently quite the seamstress, for her good works are later defined by a reference to "the coats and garments which Dorcas made" (v. 39). In those days, it could be said of many a virtuous woman that "she seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands" (Prov. 31:13 cf. vv. 22,24). Thus we know that when a Christian woman per- forms the many duties of a wife and mother, she is walking in the good works in which she was created to walk. To this must be added the testimony of the Apostle Paul, who speaks of widows who were "well reported of for good works" (I Tim. 5:10). He then goes on to describe things like bringing up children, hospital- ity, and caring for the sick as good works with which godly women can adorn them- selves (I Tim. 2:9,10). Some feel the church has adapted to the culture rather than present a Gospel that changes culture. In an effort to be- come larger, there has always been the dan- ger that the historic doctrine could be com- promised and the powerful Gospel message be neglected. Many churches are attracting large numbers of people but are failing to challenge them with the Gospel. The sin word is seldom used and social issues, like abortion and homosexuality, are never condemned. The church must never be influenced more by culture than by scrip- ture. Pastors should not pursue mega church status by lowering the standards of holy living. The Good News of the Gospel is not to be changed every time Hollywood, fake news, and politics introduces a new fad. The danger is that, in our efforts to please man, we forget the church is all about God. It is a God centered institution and people are to worship God in spirit and in truth. It is a dangerous thing to change scripture and mislead people with a Bible in hand. Peo- ple need the truth, the whole truth, and noth- ing but the truth. It alone sets people free from their sins. The Bible has stood the test of time. Those who seek to change its message will ultimately fail. There will come a time when only the real Jesus and His simple Gospel message will give the hope all people desire. "Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God: I will strengthen you, I will help you. I will up- hold you with my righteous right hand." (Isa- iah 41:10 NRSV ) Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas Greetings, hope you are having a great week full of blessings. Seems as though my family keeps the doctors in business. We had to take little Willow one day and the next my wife had to go to optometrist. It's already next week and now it is my turn be- cause I have an appointment with a derma- tologist in Evansville. We don't have time to get very bored. We gave some of our trees in the yard a little haircut so I could mow under them easier. We had one area where the limbs were down to the ground. I was able to mow without knocking my hat off for now. Talk about mowing our yard it still needs it twice a week to look decent. Of course we had a trip to Wally world to pick up medicine and necessities such as dog food and cat litter. We were there to see if our Lions Club could help one of our friends with her eye surgery. At present we are still looking for ways to help her afford her needs. Steve and I played and sang at Amber Manor this week. Some of the folks were See R AMBLINGS on 3 looking for more gospel songs and we ex- plained to them about planning a variety be- cause it reaches more of those listening. We have many songs printed and cataloged so we can sing the variety which we play. We go to Riverwalk communities this week and as always, we enjoy lifting spirits for them. I always say Steve is a good singer and I enter- tain. We played for my wife's cousin's birth- day party last Saturday evening and we all had a good time. It was a little different be- cause we each sang about five in a row in- stead of every other song. We were worn out Thursday because we mowed all three yards we are responsible for in the same day. I know I had trouble put- ting one foot in front of the other. Friday we started collecting sponsorships for our "cruise-in" which is scheduled for Aug 16 starting at 5:30 p.m. This is one of our bigger money makers so help us out if asked. I have been asked before if $10 is all we want and we tell them feel free to give all you want. They do, however we try not to place anyone in a spot where they feel obli- gated because our merchants are hit by al- most every fund raiser.
