B-2 Sports Wednesday, July 3, 2019 The Press-Dispatch Eighth annual Heartland Half Marathon registration open The eighth annual Heart- land Half Marathon is sched- uled for Saturday, Sept. 21. The event will once again include a half marathon, 5K and team challenge. Cash prizes will be given to the top three male and female half marathon finishers. First place will receive $500, second place $250 and third place $100. The races will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the shad- ow of the Jasper Train De- pot along the Patoka River and will finish in the shade at Dave Buehler Plaza, just a stone's throw away from the starting line. The hilly, scenic course takes run- ners through commercial and residential areas with challenging peaks midway through the route. Be sure to prepare yourself for this challenging portion of the course. A fter the midway point, the course largely flattens out through to the finish. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half marathon, but splits to take a different course very close to the start of the race. The team challenge is a relay comprised of a four-person team and follows the same course as the half marathon. The first team member will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her timing chip to the second member. The second member will travel 4.05 miles, the third mem- ber 2.5 miles and the final member 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $ 60 if registered before August 16, when it will increase to $70. The registration fee for the 5K is $25. The registration fee for the team challenge is $25 per person/$100 per team if registered. A 14-week training group started on Sunday, June 23, made possible by Down- town Fitness and Running. All paces and faces are wel- come. Training schedules will be made available for all Heartland race partic- ipants, whether they are running the half marathon, 5K, or team challenge. Mile- age can be adjusted based on what individuals want to train for. The training group will meet on Sundays at 7 a.m. and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at Downtown Fitness and Running, located at 331 Mill Street in Jasper. The Heartland Half Mar- athon, 5K, and Team Chal- lenge are being coordi- nated by DC Multisport, a non-profit organization ded- icated to promoting health and wellness while giving back to local communities. Lodging information is be- ing coordinated by the Du- bois County Visitors Cen- ter, and race-day event vol- unteers are being coordi- nated by Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, the event's corporate sponsor. The majority of the proceeds from this year's race will be given to the Phillip R. Daw- kins Heart & Vascular Cen- ter at Memorial Hospital to be utilized for new integra- tive medicine services pro- vided to cardiac patients. Ten percent of the proceeds will go toward the DC Mul- tisport Endowment to en- sure future stability of the organization and to contin- ue in its efforts to give to- ward worthy causes. Deer Hunt sign-ups underway Deer hunters can sign up for the chance to hunt on land owned by participat- ing landowners with the new Deer Hunt Registry system administered by DNRs Di- vision of Fish and Wildlife. The Deer Hunt Registry connects deer hunters with landowners, golf courses, parks, land trusts, farmers, or communities. The regis- try will provide interested parties with a list of hunters in the area willing to help. The Deer Hunt Registry system is replacing the for- mer Hunters Helping Farm- ers program and incorporat- ing the Community Hunter Access Program (CHAP). To learn more about CHAP, see wildlife.IN.gov/9420. htm. Hunters will be able to sign up for the chance to hunt starting July 1, 2019. Signing up on the Deer Hunt Registry does not guarantee additional hunt- ing opportunities or place- ment in a managed hunt. For more information or to sign up, see on.IN.gov/ deerhuntregistry.
