All she knows is something terrible has happened and peo- ple are trying to harm her. The woman's name is My- fanwy and as played by Emma Greenwell ("Shameless," "The Path") in the Starz psycho- logical spy thriller "The Rook," premiering Sunday, June 30, she comes to discover that she's a high-ranking operative for the Checquy, a Secret Service-like British agency that protects those with supernatural powers from the dangerous world of high-dollar trafficking. As bits of her memory return, she starts to uncover the truth about her past and her own previously dormant abilities, thus forcing her into a choice of reverting to what she was or embarking on a new beginning. Greenwell, a newcomer to science fiction, embraced the chance to build from the ground up a character who has no identity and no memory, filling in the blanks of her per- sonality as filming progressed. But the British actress admits that also came with challenges. "I tried not to pay attention to all the jargon and I really wanted to discover things as they happened," she explains. "And so, yeah, it was bizarre. It definitely got very confusing toward the end and we were shooting very much out of se- quence. "We were shooting episodes three, five, seven and six all at once and jumping around, and I was like, 'OK, so at this point I know that ... .' Because it's a puzzle and it's a mystery but without also having any knowl- edge and like at which point do I remember and all these things." The role also afforded Green- well the chance to try her hand at action, another genre to which she is a stranger. Some scenes didn't go so well, such as in the opening sequence of Sunday's premiere where she trips over one of the bodies and fractures her wrist. "I had warned them," Green- well says with a laugh. "I was like, 'I'm very accident-prone' and I think they thought I was being dramatic." In another, the crew disguised a stunt double as Greenwell to elicit a genuinely shocked reac- tion from a group of teenage extras when the woman fell from a garage roof. "One girl lost it," Greenwell says. "She was like freaking out because she'd thought I'd actu- ally fallen off the roof because they hadn't seen us shoot it pre- viously. They just came in for that. Yeah, it was pretty good. Kind of mean but also great footage. Honest reactions." Created by Lisa Zwerling ("When We Rise") and Karyn Usher ("Prison Break"), "The Rook" has a talented cast that also includes Joely Richardson ("The Tudors"), Adrian Les- ter ("Trauma"), Olivia Munn ("The Newsroom"), Ronan Raftery ("The Terror") and Jon Fletcher ("Genius"). Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop An amnesiac spy seeks her identity in the dark Starz thriller 'The Rook' Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie It's the summer of 1985 in Hawkins, Ind., and there's a new mayor in town as Season 3 of Netflix's fantasy drama series "Stranger Things" begins stream- ing Thursday, July 4. Meet Mayor Larry Kline, a prototype sleazy 1980s politi- cian played by Cary Elwes ("The Princess Bride," "The Art of More"), who must guide his town through danger when old enemies and new pose threats. At the same time, romance blossoms for members of the Hawkins crew, who must recon- cile the new relationships with the old and figure out how to grow up without growing apart. "It's the first show I ever binge- watched in my life and sat all the way through, first and second seasons," the 56-year-old Lon- don native says of why he signed on. "So I was definitely intrigued by the Duffers (series creators/ Checking in with Cary Elwes writers/producers Matt and Ross) and their concept and the qual- ity of the filmmaking and the production value and the talent, everything. It was very exciting. ... And the Duffers promised a wild ride and then they delivered and then some." Also new to the series is Maya Hawke ("Little Women"), who joins a cast that includes return- ees Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Priah Ferguson. As for his character, Elwes admits he had "a mishmash of a number of people I've been studying" in mind when creat- ing Kline but doesn't want to get into specifics, lest he offend real- life sleazy politicians. "He's definitely an untrust- worthy individual," the actor explains, "and I think that fits in with the Duffers' narrative of how they look at authority in that series. You know, most everyone working for the govern- ment is viewed through a suspect lens."
