when I started theburg, I imagined a
small publication with limited reach, much
like the neighborhood newspaper, from a
larger city, that I based it on.
more than 10 years in, that's not what has
happened at all.
Last month, we started distributing
in Adams county—our seventh county.
we now blanket the lower susquehanna
Valley, an area covering hundreds of
square miles. In some places, it's tough to
walk a block without bumping into a pile
of burgs.
this isn't necessarily perfect for us. It
costs a ton to print and distribute all those
hard copies, but, at least in this area, that's
what the market wants. so, we've done our
best to expand to meet the overwhelming
demand for our print product.
Personally, I've long thought that the
lower susquehanna should consider itself
(and market itself), as a single region,
breaking out of its many little silos to
reflect its shared history, geography,
climate and identity. As we continue to
expand, I hope that theburg is becoming
a vehicle for that to happen.
hey, you know what unites people? Pets
(how's that for a segue?).
since this is July, it's time for our annual
pet-focused issue, which means that we
have a few more stories devoted to those
four-legged creatures roaming around our
houses.
or, in some cases, two legs and two wings.
this month, I'd like to give a special shout-
out to our photographer, haley harned,
who not only shot the fabulous cover but
who owns those two animal-models. Yes,
she actually trained her bird to perch atop
her dog's head and for her kind dog to
patiently sit there for the photo shoot.
At theburg, that's the kind of
commitment to task that we appreciate.
