West named Secondary Teacher of the Year By Andy Heuring Pike Central sixth grade teacher Ju- lie West was named the Pike County Secondary Teacher of the Year. West has been teaching 32 years, with 24 of those being at the sixth grade level. West was nominated by Xavery Weisman and Hunter Traylor. Weisman wrote in her nomination, Mrs. West "may not have taught me how to count, but she did teach me what counts! " She added, "Mrs. West is someone I can count on; she makes her students feel like they count." Traylor wrote, "When I was in the sixth grade, her class was really one of my favorite classes. Even though math is not my favorite subject, she made the class fun." "I knew when I was in the third grade I wanted to be a teacher," said West. Her mother, Linda, was a teacher at Petersburg Elementary School. West said she learned from watching her mother at night working on lessons and homework. "I never had my moth- er as a teacher, but she was one of my favorites. She would come home and sit at the kitchen table with papers. She would start a page for them. She would have a letter on it. If it was the letter B, she would have the letter there and a dotted line for them to trace. She would correlate lessons with the let- ter B and talk about blue and bear. She was strict, but very loving," said West. West graduated from Indiana State University and started her teach- ing originally in Texas on a military base. She returned to Pike County and worked as an aide for Steve Belcher at Otwell Elementary and then six years in the guidance department working with at risk students. "I basically lived out of my car going to all five schools," said West. West said her parents pushed educa- tion as she was growing up. She said her grandfather and father were both pharmacists. "My father instilled in me, it isn't if you are going to college, it is where you are going to college." "I feel like I'm a Pike Central cheer- leader. I truly believe you can get an education here if you put forth the ef- fort and it can take you anywhere you want to go," said West. She named Pike Central teachers Vance Hays, John Wells and Steve Cart- er as being big influences in her life. "Vance taught me to believe in myself and got to know me as a person. John Wells, because he cared about me. . . I know Steve Carter had me ready to go be anything I wanted to be." She said her greatest joy as a teach- er is when a student has an aha mo- ment. "We you see that breakthrough moment, when their eyes light up and they get something." West said seeing students of hers grow up and achieve makes her proud, especially when a student was "a stink- er or was real mischievous and they go on to be something," "I'm ecstatic I got the award. It means the world to me," said West. She said the compliments from her stu- dents are the ones that say things like "I'm the glue that holds things togeth- er or I'm the teacher that smiles a lot." (Stephanie Shedd, of Winslow Ele- mentary School, was named the Ele- mentary Teacher of the Year. She will be featured next week). Julie West was named Pike County's Secondary Teacher of the Year. She was nominated by Xavery Weis- man and Hunter Traylor. She received the honor at the IPL Academic Excellence banquet.
