The Hoosier State Press Association Foundation believes free speech and a free press benefit all citizens and help preserve constitutional rights. Stephen Crane, managing editor of The Reporter-Times and the Mooresville-Decatur Times, leads the editorial department in Blooming- ton beginning May 1. J.J. Perry stepped down April 30 after just three months as executive editor. Reporter Lance Gideon will assume Crane's responsibilities in Martinsville and Mooresville on an interim basis. Crane has been managing editor of the Martinsville and Mooresville newspapers since September 2017. Prior to that, he was editor of two weekly newspapers in Wyoming, the Pinedale Roundup and the Sublette Examiner. He earned a master's degree in journalism from Indiana University in 2007. He was born in Bloomington. "I consider myself an unofficial Cutter," Crane said. "Bloomington is near and dear to my heart." Given the interim status of his appointment, Crane said he doesn't plan to make major changes. His focus will be on continuing to serve readers by keeping them informed. Publisher Cory Bollinger said that while the situation is not ideal, The Herald-Times will continue speaking truth to power and serving as a watchdog for the community. He did not provide a timeline for when a new executive editor will be announced. "We will move as fast as we possibly can," he said. "However, we will be patient for the right candi- date."
