TV Media Weekly | March 30 - April 5, 2019 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I would like to know what happened to the show "Good Witch." It seems to come and go a lot, but it hasn't been on for quite a while now. A: It can certainly seem like our favorite shows are gone for too long between seasons, but in fact, you can rest assured that "Good Witch" is coming back — soon, and right on schedule. The fifth season of the Hallmark Channel fantasy dramedy is sched- uled to premiere May 5. Again, that may seem like forever to eager fans, but it's just a year and a week since the fourth-season premiere. And actually, fans got a little extra to tide them over in October with the annual "Good Witch" feature- length special. Indeed, the show began life as a series of telefilms — "the most successful in the network's histo- ry," according to Hallmark — and has been airing new ones at roughly the mid-season point each year since the show began. That could be the cause of the coming-and-going effect you men- tion, because the show has actual- ly stuck pretty rigidly to the late spring premiere schedule since the beginning. Q: I finally got around to see- ing "The Shape of Water" and was wondering about the song she sings to him toward the end. What song was it, and what's the movie she took it from? A: One of the many emotional climaxes in the Oscar-winning 2017 oddball "The Shape of Wa- ter" was the scene where Elisa, mute until that point, begins ten- tatively to sing "You'll Never Know" to her amphibious, sea monster boyfriend (to those who haven't seen it, that makes sense in context, I promise). Soon she's bathed in a spotlight, color fades to black-and-white, and a silver screen-style dance number breaks out — part of the film's extended tribute to old-time Hollywood. The song "You'll Never Know" originally appeared in the 1943 film "Hello, Frisco, Hello," a clip of which is played earlier in "The Shape of Water," so that this oth- erwise bonkers musical number makes some narrative sense. The original performance of the song, in "Hello, Frisco, Hello," was by '40s film star Alice Faye. It was written specifically for that movie by the great cinematic songwrit- ing team of Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, and they them- selves won the Best Original Song Oscar for it. Have a question? Sometimes it's a rich, succulent burger or buttery and salty popcorn; other times we want something sweet, like a big, generous slice of pecan pie or an entire tub of chocolate ice cream. Being pregnant, though, can take those cravings to an en- tirely new level, and one of Food Network's most endearing hosts is inviting viewers to join her on a food-focused journey through her pregnancy. A new season of "Girl Meets Farm" kicks off Sunday, March 31, with host Molly Yeh setting out on a new adventure: im- pending motherhood. Through- out the season, she brings her combined Chinese and Jewish heritage to bear as she tackles the challenges — and the ex- citement — of pregnancy. In this week's season premiere, Molly puts some tasty spins on a few of her favorite dishes that she prepares for the dad-to-be, her husband, Nick. She prepares a Chicago dog meatloaf with a mustard glaze, makes a salt-and- vinegar potato galette and whips up some wedge salads with ba- con and feta cream. Next week, as her due date draws closer, the host prepares some make-ahead meals that are destined for the freezer for those days when she just doesn't have the energy to cook. On the menu are sweet potato and black bean burritos, mini spinach and arti- choke chicken casseroles, and even some potato bagel break- fast sandwiches. Of course, she expects dad to help out, so she also teaches Nick how to prepare a succulent (and super quick) salmon sheet pan supper with horseradish sauce. Over the next few weeks, Mol- ly hosts a baby shower and learns a few cherished family recipes from her own mother. Of course, it isn't all baby all the time, and the host also whips up a fresh spring feast to share with her family. Molly Yeh is a big-city girl who grew up in Chicago's suburbs be- fore marrying and moving to her husband's farm on the Minneso- ta-North Dakota border. She's a woman with a wealth of experi- ences, and she shares them with audiences in "Girl Meets Farm," Sundays on Food Network.
