Christy began the series as a wait- ress and has since earned a bache- lor's degree and been accepted to law school. Along the way, she has had serious relationship problems with her daughter, Violet (Sadie Calvano, "Melissa & Joey"), who has cut Christy out of her life; has dated a number of duds (and a few good ones, too), developed close friendships, helped those in need, lost loved ones and grappled with the consequences of decisions she made before getting sober. Christy is a satisfyingly multidimensional character, which is hard to come by in the sitcom world. Besides comedy, what the show does best is highlight the cyclical nature of Christy's problems, and show how one generation can have a lasting impact on those who come after. Right off the bat, the show displayed these princi- ples when, in the first episode of the series, Violet announced that she was pregnant at 17, just like both Christy and Bonnie had been before her. All three generations of women continuously try to break the cycle — sometimes they're successful, sometimes they're not, but the more we learn about them, the better we understand their plight. The whole premise of the show sounds dour and depressing, but true to form, Lorre stacks each epi- sode with situational comedy and one-liners that leave audiences in stitches. If you ask me, Bonnie is the highlight of the show. She's an outrageous and hilarious charac- ter, layered with traits that are loathsome, sympathetic and relat- able. We've learned a lot about Bonnie's past over the past few seasons: she spent most of her childhood in foster care, was preg- nant at 17 and immediately aban- doned by her partner, struggled with young motherhood and spi- raled into an adulthood full of par- ties and intoxication. She, too, has come a long way since season 1, and is currently engaged to Adam (Fichtner), a wheelchair-bound former stunt- man. This relationship has been a stabilizing force in her life, though her brassy, mouthy personality re- mains, thank goodness. This sea- son, Bonnie is diagnosed with ADD, which she immediately uses as an excuse for all kinds of out- landish behavior. She also begins seeing a therapist, who is played by special guest star Rainn Wilson ("The Office"), a comedy legend in his own right. On the surface, it's a comedy se- ries meant to crack you up — and it will — but "Mom" will keep you coming back for the sweet (and of- ten very salty) relationships be- tween the women of the show. The complex female characters are much more satisfying than those in most comedies, and the jokes land better because of them. Check in with Bonnie, Christy and the gang when a new episode of "Mom" airs Thursday, April 4, on CBS.
