He started out writing for the now-classic "Roseanne," and soon began creating series of his own. "Grace Under Fire," "Cybill" and "Dharma & Greg" were forerun- ners of "Two and a Half Men," while "The Big Bang Theory," "Mike and Molly" and "The Kominsky Method," among oth- ers, followed. All of these shows were (and some continue to be) honored with numerous awards. In retrospect, the success of Lorre's series "Mom" seems pre- destined, but when Allison Janney ("The West Wing") and Anna Faris ("Overboard," 2018) signed on to star in the series ahead of its 2013 premiere, they had no idea just how far it would take them. You can catch a new season 6 episode when it airs Thursday, April 4, on CBS. In a recent interview with James Corden, Janney talked about how neither she nor her co-stars had any idea that "Mom" would be such a big hit, despite Lorre's cre- dentials. In fact, early in its run, there was a large gathering in hon- or of Lorre, and cast members from all his shows gathered to take a commemorative photo. As the newest, untested members of the group, Janney and Faris were told to stand in the very back. In order to ensure they made a lasting im- pression, the two kissed while the photo was being taken. "I think it's the only photo he has in his office. He loves it," Janney said. It was an early example of the chemistry between Janney and Faris, and a sign of how committed they are to getting a laugh. It's that chemistry and commitment that makes "Mom" work, and the se- ries has already been renewed for two more seasons (that will take it to eight), so the combination is ob- viously working well. The show fol- lows Christy (Faris), a recovering alcoholic and single mother striv- ing to better herself and overcome her past. Her mother, Bonnie (Jan- ney), is both a saviour and a stum- bling block for Christy, and their roller-coaster of a relationship is captivating. In addition to the two impressive leads, the show boasts a roster of fabulous supporting actors, includ- ing Jaime Pressly ("My Name Is Earl"), Mimi Kennedy ("The Brink"), Beth Hall ("Mad Men"), Kristen Johnston ("Third Rock From the Sun"), Yvette Nicole Brown ("Community") and William Fich- tner ("Armageddon," 1998).
