TV Media Weekly | March 16 - 22, 2019 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: In "America's Funniest Home Videos," why does the audience always look all dressed up? A: You think of restaurants and nightclubs as having a dress code, but you'd never expect it from a show about people em- barrassing themselves on cam- era. Yet "America's Funniest Home Videos" has one. I guess we should think of it as attending two dozen film premieres — if you want to be in the audience for the world debut of "Man Gets Hit in Crotch by Baseball Part 267," you have to dress the part. (Note that I'm not knocking videos of people getting hit with things — they're funny, every single time, which is why "Amer- ica's Funniest Home Videos" has been a Sunday night TV main- stay since 1989.) Audiences Unlimited Inc. is the company that books live studio audiences for "AFV" and all sorts of other shows, and its ticket-booking website is emphatic. "The studio audi- ence at 'AFV' appears on cam- era and appropriate dressy at- tire is required. Jackets/dress shirts and slacks preferred for men. Absolutely NO casual at- tire please." And, much like an exclusive nightclub, there are conse- quences for not complying. "Guests not dressed appropri- ately may be denied admission." Q: I love "Gotham" and the many talented actors in it. I read that this is its last sea- son, but I'm hoping maybe the CW network will pick it up, since that network has so many more shows from the genre. Any chance? A: Almost none. You can never say never, of course, but the pro- ducers have already moved on from "Gotham," and they would need to be behind a revival. You raise an interesting point, though: why isn't "Gotham" on CW with all those other DC Comics-based shows ("The Flash," "Arrow" and so on)? "Gotham" may air on Fox, which is a competing network, but it shares a more important link — it's produced by Warner Bros., which owns a piece of CW (via its parent company, AT&T). "Gotham's" tone is a little darker and grittier than those CW shows I mentioned, which may be why Warner opted to place it on Fox instead. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. For those of us who live in more northerly climes — you know, those places that have spent the past few months buried under several feet of snow — it's an exciting time with longer days, returning birds and melting snow, but even folks in the balmy south get the plea- sure of one particular sign of the season: the return of "Spring Baking Championship." The Food Network series, which premieres Monday, March 18, always blooms at this time of year, and it's kind of a big deal. The show, along with the net- work's other seasonal competi- tions, is a huge ratings hit, and last season it attracted the big- gest audiences in its history. Spring is all about renewal, and this year's "Spring Baking Championship" takes that to heart by welcoming a new host. Fashion consultant and former "The Chew" presenter Clinton Kelly takes the position this year, taking over from "Cheap Eats" host Ali Khan. At the judges' ta- ble things are more familiar, with Nancy Fuller, Duff Goldman and Lorraine Pascale returning to the positions that they've held since the very first season. Ten bakers enter the kitchen in this week's premiere, and for their first challenge, they're tasked with making sumptuous spring animal-themed dough- nuts. Then, once the judges have had their first taste of what the competitors are capable of, the bakers are asked to bring out their inner artists to make and decorate gorgeous watercolor cakes featuring scenes of iconic spring fruits and vegetables. Sadly, this is a competition, and only one baker can ultimate- ly win the title of Spring Baking Champion. At the end of the epi- sode, the worst-performing baker is sent packing by the judges, but the relief is short-lived for the re- maining competitors. Throughout the competition, they are asked to bake ribbon-worthy rhubarb pies, make marshmallow des- serts for Easter and even partici- pate in a tart-filled spelling bee. Spring really is in the air, and the air has the scent of delicious baked goodies. "Spring Baking Championship" premieres Mon- day, March 18, on Food Network.
