C O N T E N T S Exploring a modern makeover Avoid flushing your money away — value efficiency when it comes to a toilet To get what you want in a home, have an honest conversation with builder A publication of the Waukesha Freeman and Oconomowoc Enterprise • MARCH 2019 By Catherine Jozwik Special to Waukesha County Home Spring is just weeks away, but Wiscon- sin polar temperatures lingered on longer than hoped for, much to the cha- grin of many residents. When cabin fever strikes, having a clean and organ- ized home can bring relaxation to those who are stuck indoors. For those who enjoy the cleaning process, a thorough housecleaning can bring immense satisfaction. "What we do with a deep clean is start from the top and work down," said Reta Engelking, owner of Brookfield's Clean- ing Maid Affordable, who founded the business in 1994. Fans and lights should be dusted off, followed by woodwork, including tops of doors and baseboards. From there, Engleking recommended cleaning the messiest room in the home. "The first thing you want to do is organize and go through all your piles," she said, adding that a good method is to start at one corner and work toward the center of a room. Furniture should be moved so that the area underneath can be mopped, and cushions should be lifted so that wood- work can be dusted. Hiring a cleaning service is a practical solution for those who have neither time nor energy for thorough housecleaning. Some services, including Cleaning Maid, meet with homeowners and customize housecleaning to meet their needs. Over the years, Cleaning Maid has built up an extensive list of regular clients, which keeps the company busy year-round. "When snowbirds get back from Florida in the summer, we are real- ly busy," Engelking noted. Engelking said the cost of a single housecleaning visit can range from $130 to upward of $250, depending on a vari- ety of factors, including the size of the home and whether the residents have pets or young children.
