GRAFTON — The next meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians will feature a Milwaukee resident who served as a combat medic with the famed 101st Airborne as guest speaker. The 101st was positioned in the perilous A Shau Valley in far northern South Vietnam, where his infantry recon platoon was moved to support one of the U.S.'s forward artillery fire bases. What happened the very next morning in May 1970 after their arrival was a 5 a.m. surprise assault by battalion strength North Vietnamese Army. The fire base had been hastily constructed with poorly positioned fields of defensive view and fire. A three-hour long battle ensued, during which the unit medic, George Banda, whose duty was tending the many wounded in his care, was hit. Despite the confusion, shock and loss of blood, he bravely went on to perform his service, earning him the prestigious Silver Star for actions above and beyond the call of duty. Please join the group Monday, March 18 as it honors Banda and hear from him of these actions and more during hours of peril under hostile fire in Vietnam. Admission price of $20 includes the buffet dinner from Ferrante's and the speaker's presentation. A limited number of seats are available for $8 each for the speaker's program, which begins around 7 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the evening will officially begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Rose-Harms American Legion Post, 1540 13th Ave. Visitors are welcome, but reservations are required of all. Call Ken Grigas at 262-284-1090 or email rsvp@mkemh.org.
