TV Media Weekly | March 9 - 15, 2019 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: How are the Roloffs? Do you think they will come back? A: The Roloff family will almost certainly come back — TLC prom- ised us as much. But there will be fewer of them when they return for their 14th season on TV. At the end of Season 13 last summer, Jeremy Roloff an- nounced on social media that he, his wife, Audrey, and their daugh- ter, Ember, would not be return- ing. It was a sad bit of news for fans who had watched him grow up since he was a teenager, and who looked forward to seeing Ember do the same. However, there was some good news mixed in there: his post con- firmed that another season was coming. "We will still be support- ing the family as they carry the #LPBW ["Little People, Big World"] torch onward," he wrote. "This is a decision concerning Au- drey and me specifically — the show must go on!" Of course, it's not just up to the family — they need the network on board as well. Fortunately, TLC is happy to keep airing its net- work-defining hit. Q: I'm just catching up with "Star Trek: Discovery" and am wondering: Is Rainn Wilson's character a reference to some - thing from one of the old shows? He feels, I don't know, significant somehow. A: You have a good eye for character development. In a show, indeed a long series of shows, that often features a creep-of-the- week type of disposable villain, Harcourt Fenton Mudd (Harry, for short) is indeed different. The fact that he's being played by a known actor — former "The Office" star Rainn Wilson — is a giveaway, but for fans of the origi - nal '60s "Star Trek" series, the name alone does it. Harry Mudd was a recurring, fan-favorite char- acter in the original show. Mudd is an intergalactic space conman who first appeared in the sixth-ever "Star Trek" episode (ti- tled "Mudd's Women"). He re- turned again in the second sea- son, in an episode titled "I, Mudd," and again in an episode of "Star Trek: The Animated Se- ries" that aired in the mid-'70s. In an interview with StarTrek. com, Wilson, an avowed fan of the series, said, "To get to go back and do a classic character from the original series ... You know, ac- tors are always like, 'Oh, it's a dream come true.' It really was a dream come true for me." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Sure, the tasty sweets have always been there, but lately it feels like there are more cakes, cupcakes and cake pops than you can shake a mix- ing spoon at. Two men can share the credit for really setting the trend. Buddy Valastro and Duff Gold- man's shows "Cake Boss" and "Ace of Cakes," respectively, were huge hits for the network, putting shows about decadent- ly magnificent cakes on the map, and now the two titans of baking are going head to head to find out which one of them is the best. "Buddy vs. Duff" kicks off Sunday, March 10. Over the course of six weeks, the two ti- tans of cakes will be tested on their baking techniques, their design skills and their flavors. Each episode features two challenging rounds meant to test Buddy and Duff: a bake-off to test their skills and a cake- off to test their imaginations and decorating chops. In this week's premiere, the very first challenge is a person- al one when the rivals are tasked with baking their favor- ite time-honored family recipes. For the cake-off round, Buddy and Duff get to work making cakes inspired by cars, com- plete with all the bells and whistles that we've come to ex- pect from the two accom- plished cake artists. Over the course of the sea- son, Buddy and Duff will have to make desserts for a dog- pampering party, design en- chanting illusion cakes for a magic show, prepare wedding cakes for a couple's big day and even come up with carnival treats to serve to the patrons of a crowded amusement park. Every facet of professional cake making will be tested, and both bakers need to bring their A game if they want to come out on top. At the end of the six grueling weeks of competition, only one of the two bakers can be crowned the king of cakes. Of course, it's all in good fun for both of them — their rivalry is a friendly one, and they're both really, really good at what they do. "Buddy vs. Duff" premieres Sunday, March 10, on Food Network.
